The second time the slaves are made to dance for the Master and Mistress (after the rape scene) , Patsey seems to have a very small bump under her nightgown. The Mistress tells her husband something like "beat it out of her", I think. Was I mistaken? If there was (or was going to be) a baby, it was never mentioned again, was it?
shareNo, she didn't. Patsy wore that same empire-waist nightgown in a prior dancing scene, when the Mistress got upset and threw the whiskey decanter at her. In the second dancing scene, where the Mistress didn't give Patsy a treat and hit her, she wanted Master to beat the insolence out of her as she claimed Patsy gave her a rude look whenever she didn't give her a treat. There was no baby bump, it was just the style of the nightgown.
It appears to me that when the slaves were sent to work with the Judge that during the intervening years before their return that Patsy had not only given birth to the master's child but had also been routinely beaten by the master. The age of the child shows that the slaves had actually been loaned out for several years.
