Do people realize that slavery wasn't just the white man's fault?

Africans were enslaving their fellow Africans long before any white man sailed to West Africa. The notations of white men chasing black men around the jungles is just Hollywood, a myth, just not true. Of course that does NOT negate the fact that the white Euros were eager and willing to purchase.

White slavers purchased and bartered for their slaves from the black African slave trading posts in west Africa. There was no brainwashing, no wars, just simple but vile human commerce.

There were also plenty of Native American slaves.....BUT Natives had NO defenses against dirty Euro diseases, and either got deathly ill, or outright died. Africans had previous contact with Euros, and had immunity to the diseases already.

Exactly. People should realise that:

*Slavery existed in Africa for thousands of years, although is was not a major economic factor until the Arab slave trade began in about the 8th century.

*Many more slaves were sold through the trans Sahara trade then were sold though the trans Atlantic trade.

*Slaves included blacks and Europeans.

*A very small percentage (about 6.5%) of the slaves that were sent to the New World ended up in what became the US. Most about 38.5% went to Portuguese colonies.

*There are more slaves today than at any time in history. Up to 30 million.

Now explain the part about the role that the Africans played in the utter inhumanity inside the holds of the slave ships. Chained shoulder to shoulder on their backs, below deck for 3 months, in a space 18 inches high. Dysentery...vomiting from seasickness... bowel movements...and dead bodies...all where they laid. Minimal food. And best of all, insurance policies created to cover the huge amount of EXPECTED deaths enroute.

Try again!

White guilt predicated revisionist garbage!

Good point Georgie. That's why I don't see why blacks want to stay here if they feel they're getting a raw deal. Liberia and Sierra Leone were specifically founded as nations for freed slaves so why not go back? After all blacks are the ONLY race that came here by force and didn't want to be here.

Jesus NEVER existed! He is Judeo Christian MYTH!

They're HERE! In fact, since it's "a nation of immigrants", they've generally been here much longer than the vast majority of other nationalities that are presently here. So, they're not GOING anywhere! Instead, here's a novel idea...a fully equal right to self-determination IN America (ala that whole Constitution thingy), maybe??? Instead of the endless race-based lying, cheating and stealing perpetually required to maintain the institutions of white supremacy (finance, government, military, education, etc.)!

Nah!

Too radical!

Nevermind!

Flip side of the coin: the blacks are here because they were "invited." The Europeans are just gate-crashers. Why not kick them out?

You are misrepresenting the facts here.. DO YOUR RESEARCH.

Wow, way to refute him!

reply

What's your point? Because blacks enslaved other blacks that American race slavery was okay?

reply

Er...I'm pretty sure the OP was trying to scrub off the blame on white people. After all, he wasn't wrong. Unfortunately, Africans did sell slaves. Still, that doesn't justify what whites did to them. But people shouldn't think only whites were behind this...

Life is like a beautiful melody, only the lyrics are messed up.

Sentiments like the first poster's comments are essentially apologies for slavery in the U.S.

Nobody is fooled.

Georgie, the constitution also says blacks were 3/5 a man and all the founding fathers were slaveholders! For almost the 1st hundred years of this nation blacks were just property. Even the Supreme court said that in the Dred Scott case.

There was a "Back to Africa" movement spearheaded by blacks themselves. Many African nations will even give residency to people of African descent!

Parts of Africa are very modernized too. Check out the Lagos, Nigeria and Nairobi, Kenya videos on youtube. I was shocked at how modern they are! I'd like to visit it someday. Africa is not some primitive wasteland anymore and even in modern times THOUSANDS of American blacks have moved there!

No, these are simple historical truths.

The white guilt is drivel. White serfs in contemporary Russia were not treated much better by their white masters than blacks in the American South.

Slavery in the US and some other places started due to racism. A lot of the slaves that were transported to the US were free in Africa.

Black slavery started out of pure utilitarianism. The black slaves were the most effective way to cultivate the land. Indians died like flies and there was not enough white labour. The racist nonsense was invented to make this utilitarian arragement morally palatable.

This is a pointless thread. Does someone think America is the only place on earth to have slaves, white people were the only ones to own slaves and black people were the only slaves on earth? Here's an actual newsflash for you, NO ONE thinks that. This movie happened to not be about all slaves throughout history so stop trying to negate the suffering of ACTUAL slaves with your fake history lesson.

reply

What are you on about? You actually agree with the OP (that slavery isn't just a white on black thing) and at the end of your post you're saying that he's giving a "fake history lesson"? Backpedaling much?

Yes, you are correct, and so is the OP. Subsaharan Africans had slaves. Egyptians had slaves. Mesopotamians had slaves. Every race did.

The OP is also correct into saying that people generally tend to think white Americans were 100% responsible for black slavery in America, when Africans themselves sold their own people to America!

To put it bluntly, Africans were enslaving their fellow Africans long before any white man sailed to West Africa.

Read your history books, sheeple.

You are absolutely right, Europeans are not solely at fault for the action of selling people. Slavery existed for centuries before it came to America.

HOWEVER, it was THE WAY it was enforced in this country that makes the stain stick and so unforgivable. As a history professor of mine who has traveled to various regions of Africa explained it to me that when she did encounter slaves in Morroco, she said she could have a conversation with these people, they still retained their identity and where they came from. There was absolutely none of that in America. When black people were brought here, they were stripped of all that by their masters in addition to not having human status in American society.

Yes, you should acknowledge that African slavers did play a role in this but that doesn't excuse the centuries of psychological torment on a people who were literally forced here that we are still fighting to this date.

Sweet baby, I need fresh blood...

A crucial point that the OP and FAR too may slavery "clarifiers" conveniently omit is that the capture and selling of Africans by Africans was often a time & resource saving option encouraged by white slavers that paid disproportionately small prices to Africans for them to do their dirty and dangerous work for them. Africans had the choice in many instances to either "hunt & capture" for white slavers or, if the slavers had to go to the trouble, become hunted and captured themselves. Rock. Hard place.

The mechanisms invoked by white slavers were many and complex and to singularly assign blame to Africans that sold slaves to some diabolically enterprising undermining of their race is lazy and self-serving.

Did it occur? Yes but unless you're working hard to sound like a myopic bigot, add the appropriate nuance the subject deserves.
