scene on the veranda of a plantation...I'm confused

A Negro woman dressed in antebellum style is saying, "It's been years since I've felt the whip". Who / What is she? She's not dressed like a house slave. Is she married to / kept by the plantation owner? Was this a thing?

The plantation owner treated her like a mistress or concubine, hence why she was called "Mistress Shaw." That's why she relates to Patsy, who is also an object of lust for her master (but is obviously not elevated the way Mistress Shaw is).
