Does this make sense...

...they "accidently" reverse over a man, killing him, and are taken to a police station... From where they are almost immediately released?? Is this remotely realistic? No consequences, charges, jail? Next scene they are merrily resuming their camping holiday?

Chris might have been released on bail. We don't see what happens in the police station, only that they leave. Also it seemed clear that Chris was on a suicide road trip so he wouldn't have cared for the consequences if he was on bail because he would never return to answer any case.

There were a couple of witnesses, so I guess the implication was that they reported that the guy just stepped out behind the caravan, everyone agreed that it was a horrible accident, statements were taken and Chris was free to go.

The thing is, though, is that it's quite difficult to imagine a situation where a car mows down a pedestrian, and it's 'no question' the pedestrian's fault. Most of the time, the onus will be on the car driver to look where he's turning, reversing, driving, etc, especially in a situation like this, where the car would have to be reversing at a fair clip and the the driver should have been on the lookout for pedestrians.

Possibly Chris was free to go while the CPS looked at the statements and the evidence and decided whether or not to proceed with a charge of careless driving, or whatever. Not sure how it works at that point.

I'm not one who nitpicks movies but that thing bugged me too. I don't know how it works in UK - in Italy it'd be "omicidio colposo" (unintentional murder) which is punished by imprisonment (up to 5 years).
Any info?

This was the only reason I didn't give the film a 10/10.

Yeah, it's quite realistic although they don't show he would have been there for some hours, possibly overnight before release. If the police had his correct ID, he had a permanent address that had been checked, he didn't have a history of violent offences and there was no other genuine reason to think he'd flee the country before the investigation was completed then yes, they'd release him on bail while the accident was investigated. Even full blown murder suspects where there's no previous history of violence or reason to think they'd interfere with witnesses or flee the country get bailed. There's only certain reasons in the UK that a suspect gets kept in police custody until an investigation is complete and first court appearance occurs and they're to do with previous history, known character, what family ties there are to the country, likliehood of absconding, likliehood of intimidating witnesses or destroying evidence.

Give me a hedgehog and I'll show you.
