Halfway through...this is a really well made movie, great performances.... BUT

I really do question the authenticity of the Vatican. It has all of these arcane rituals for the Cardinals with many details and of course the smoke signals.

Roman Catholic is really hard to understand. Who really who cares who is Pope, just a flawed and corruptible human figure head. I wonder what Jewish people think of these Conclaves. Are their rituals and beliefs elaborate and misguided?

I care who the Pope is

reply

Well I am glad you enjoyed it. I don't mean any disrespect. I just don't understand RC at all.

reply

If you were Catholic, you would understand why they care who the Pope is. According to Church teaching, he is the Vicar of Christ and successor of Peter. When he speaks "ex cathedra" (you'll have to look that up), he is infallible. Catholics believe he was chosen by God to hold the position he has.

I'm not Catholic and I reject all of that but that is why, for a large portion of the world, the Pope is a big deal. And that's not to mention the enormous political power the Pope has held throughout large portions of European history.

reply

Why does he have to be corrupt automatically? If everyone is evil how can anyone be good?

What you should really be questioning is why people still adhere to those super old antiquated ideas.

Another interesting film, Heretic and the discussion about source material.

A bunch of men parading around with pointy hats and coloured smoke...does that have anything to do with original source material? Seems tragic and misguided.

reply

This film clearly isn't for your demographic.

Well i enjoyed the filmmaking and the performances were great. Is this really an accurate portrayal of the inner workings of something privvy to only a select group? My point is ...who cares?...and these devoted people, so concerned with their ruminations and intrigue...over nothing at all really.

It is just humans overly complicating things and in my opinion they are scurring around with pointy hats and garbs and it is much adu about nothing at all.

How did you find it?

reply

The fact that you aren't even slightly engaged in the underlying conflict, have no regard for the history, past dramas, etc., puts you basically outside the film's audience - who cares ? Those who do. You're not engaged. That's ok, that's your privilege.

I care, not because I'm religious, but because the institution exists, the history is there to be understood and appreciated, or not - the conflicts do exists, and this was an artful dramatization of them. Very, in fact, thought provoking.

The RC Church, whatever anyone thinks of it, is an institution that has lasted now two millennia. Think about that. Now think of anything else to compare with it.

Thank you for this thoughtful response. I guess this was promoted as an important thriller and as a film there is spectacle. You get a priviledged "inside look" at what so few get to see. Am I right about that?

So naturally, on the one hand I am impressed with the fine filmmaking and details shown - this is interesting. But overall it is wild woke fiction and frankly could easily have been science fiction - why not make the reveal an alien.

This makes me question how far removed this institution is from the actual source, even if two millenium in the making.

Just FYI, I have been to Rome, and fortunate enough to see and hear Pope John Paul II at St. Peter's Square.
