Why was Paulsen handcuffed when they discovered her?

She got away when he was tending to the plane and presumably lost him, so why was she handcuffed when they found her? Where did they find her? Thanks.

I have the same question. Maybe she became a victim again, only of another guy...?

I found the answer by reading up on the real case. When she ran away, she did so while still handcuffed. The first place she ran to after escaping him was to a hotel, where she made a huge commotion and they called the police. So at that moment in the film, it was directly following her escape. So they did a pretty good job of depicting what actually happened, but they were not very clear in explaining to the viewer what was going on.

Yeah this confused the hell out of me too. With the shaky cam and not knowing anything about the story, it appeared to me that she was handcuffed to something inside the hotel room, when in fact she was just handcuffed. As a side note, how did the cop have the right key to release the handcuffs? Is that a standard locking mechanism or something on those cuffs (kind of like doors that can be intentionally unlocked from the other side?)

Thanks for clearing it up!

"how did the cop have the right key to release the handcuffs? Is that a standard locking mechanism..."

Yes, only max security handcuffs have custom keys. Without a standard key for the rest, moving prisoners and suspects would be an awkward logistical mess.
