Were there car phones in 1983?
50 Cent has a car phone in his Olds. I grew up in the 80s and did not know anyone who had a car phone. CBs, yes, but car phones?

shareThere was even a car phone in a episode of The Andy Griffith show. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cAOwgRMaGZ4 That means they at least go as far back as the 60's..
"Gentlemen. You can't fight in here. This is the War Room!"
Thanks for the link! That was just so cute!
shareCar phones were more popular and numerous than the mobile type by far in the 80s. And they have a much longer history that you have assumed.
'Then' and 'than' are completely different words and have completely different meanings.
They even had a car phone in the original "Sabrina". Bogie called his office from the limo on the way into Manhattan.
shareCar phones have been around since the 40s--mind you, those were monster devices, very expensive, and with very low capacity [ie only a small number of people could have them before the local carrying capacity was maxed out].
They didn't become popular until the 70s, and hit mainstream in the 80s. Too bad, they were quickly overpowered by cellphones, and then the mobile phone boom of the 90s took care of both of those.
I can remember scenes from "Beginning of the End" from 1957 in which the reporter lady called her editor or someone from her car phone. It looked pretty much like they had taken a home rotary phone (roughly the size and weight of a square yard block of concrete) and stuck it in the car as a prop. The concept was there and sound though...
"A naked American man stole my balloons!"
"Whaaa-aaat?"
Like everyone has said, yes, they existed. Would a street level pimp in Alaska have one? No, probably not. I wouldn't be shocked if there wasn't service accessible in Alaska, period, during that time.
There also probably not any strippers in Alaska with tramp stamps and thongs in 1983-84, either. Neither of those really became common for another 10 years almost.
You're overlooking 1 thing - like Washington DC, Omaha, & Colorado Springs, Anchorage is a big Federal city, i.e. not many would live there unless they were employed by the government. The car could've easily been a former government agency one, which he picked up at auction, & chose to keep the service after switching the phone #. I got my 1st car at a dealer auction in 1987, & saw former limos for sale (I believe Lincoln Continentals) with phones still installed.
I'm with u on the trampstamps tho - didn't get to inspect them up close til the mid 90s.
