If you could change one thing about the movie, what would it be?

Looking back at it now, this movie was niether the best movie ever nor disastrous, but I felt like it could have been better. I felt like, and I noticed some other people picked up on it as well, that it would have been interesting to have it be like a nature-like thing. Not necessarily like The Happening, but to where the villian was nature because the first half of the movie defenitly gave off the vibe that nature could very well have gotten evil. I mean we all saw a random bear come out of nowhere, plant growth in buildings and all. I tried to hold onto that idea, however when I saw the dogs looked pretty normal, and that made it a wrap. I dunno, I think that would have been something that could have changed.

I think it would have been interesting to see Yuri survive like he was the one who purposely brought them there and continued to do tours and bring more people in this situation. Because I got the feeling that he knew what was happening. How he said it wasnt safe after dark or whatever and then when they said they heard a baby crying and he knew it wasnt a baby crying and then he had a gun.

An after credits scene: Yuri back at his travel agency. A group of American/Western tourists are chatting him up about a tour. Yuri: "of course, if you would like to do something extreme..." Tourist:"Well, what's your track record?" Yuri:"Well, comrade, lets just say no one has ever came back for a refund."

reply

I think this is a great idea. Like he was working on getting rid of outsiders by feeding them to the mutants of his home country.

reply

Dude! I love it. Obviously Yuri knew there were people out there, and I figured (for a while) he wasn't really dead. That would've been a great ending. It would've been a much better fit for his character.

reply

I thought it was good the way it was. Held my attention start to finish.

watched it today, turned off all the lights in room with friends.

And honestly i enjoyed alot of parts of the movie.... i find too many horrors that are too much of slashers... or just pop stuff at you in ur face...

I love it when it creepy and suspensfull and it makes u go like freaking out at the tv from what coming next.

I feel like not many movies are made this days in this style it a shame cause it only type of movies that get anything out of me anymore.

The ones that have creepy child in background, stuff is happing, and what haunting you in the dark... is not revealed till the very end.

Similar feeling i gotten was from movie "Woman in Black" just wishing for more movies. I do think the ending could had been better though in Chernobyl Diaries.

Although the movie could've been a lot better story-wise, but the one thing I would've liked changed was the "found footage" type camera. I get it if it was actually a found footage film, but since it wasn't, I don't get why they shot the whole movie like that.

reply

I would have changed it by having the mutants all be in their heads due to radiation poisoning. The soldiers could have disabled Yuri's van, instead of the mutants. I know that hallucinations are not really a side effect of radiation but it could still work, imo.

Hire a real director. Somebody that doesn't think shaking a camera and shooting in darkness is a cover for his lack of talent.

*SPOILERS LIKE CRAZY* Agreed mate! Wish that the acting and cinematography were better. The characters were pretty stupid, and the timing in the movie was wonky what with it suddenly being night when they were out walking, etc. Also, when the girl was grabbed suddenly from the stairs and was nowhere to be found when they were like 15 feet from her... and what was with the car rolling? When they viewed it on the camera, the screaming was silly and actually made me lol for the bad acting. Also, all their shouting or stopping to cry at inappropriate/dangerous moments. Or shooting without any chance of hitting anything... as opposed to when they might have used it to kill the dogs. Or him not laying down on the ground at the end. I just don't think people are that dumb. But maybe my expectations of people are too high :P Probably. And wouldn't people have noticed the missing guard? And what was with that stupid hospital / institution at the end? I just can't think of a feasible reason why they would have such a thing. Even with stupid movie logic. Why would anyone be keeping random mutant cannibals alive? Seems a waste of time to me.

This movie could have been so much better than it was. It was not scary at all and it should have been. First of all what normal person would want to tour a nuclear disaster site? I wouldn't. Instead of having the stupid American kids on the dummy mission I would have had scientists going there to figure out how massive amounts of radiation really affect an area. And then they find out the hard and scary way. Chernobyl is one of the most screwed up places on the planet. It is a wasteland and there is no telling what horrors are really in there. I don't think the whole truth has ever really been told about it. That is fertile territory for a good writer and director. Chernobyl Diaries had a lot of potential, but it just didn't live up to the potential it could have had.

reply

Actually they have quite a few tourists going through Pripyat on guided tours. It's perfectly normal to be curious, I would go if I had the chance.

I agree though, it is fertile territory for a GOOD writer and director. :)

i think i would of had a depressing ending in which the doctors were talking about the mutants which the audience does get some information about what is going on, which and as to why they are heading back their and why was their a Triage center or mini research station their.then we see that paul, amanda, zoe that did survived but were in fact gone insane from the radiation and became the mutants and are in this asylum type room full of the mutants screaming, laughing walking around getting this disturbed vision of what the situation is going on like they just left them their for the world to lock them away as a dirty little secret of what happened over their.

I agree the movie would have been great if it was concentrated more on the fact of radiation poisoned people escaping and running amock. Too much of the movie was spent on the build-up and the big chase scenes that really got boring fast. All that time wandering around with Uri and going into apartments would have been better spent on the build up to the radiated freaks and what the doctors or such do with them.

Agree on this.

I was watching, thinking I had it all figured out, just like someone else said - that it turns out it was actually an "extreme tour" and the one brother (the jerk one) was the only one that wasn't in on it. I was disappointed when I discovered that the movie was actually trying to be scary and not set-up. I felt like I wasted a few of my precious hours.
I don't know if anyone else has read or watched anything on Chernobyl or Pripyat(River), but there aren't rabid dogs or bears. There is an occasional wolf or boar though. There are pretty big fish, as Jeremy Wade on "River Monsters" discovered when he got permission to fish there. It is very quiet and you do have to carry a radiation meter with you. You also have to pass through the radiation portals (how they could find a way to sneak in with Uri is very unbelievable.)
Anyway, a very disappointing movie, especially for people like me who know about the Chernobyl disaster!
