Anyone else sad about tonight's episode? (spoilers)

I really hate that Sister Evangelina is gone now. I just loved her spunky personality. She was one of the best ones on the show. Now almost all the original people are gone. Did anyone else cry like a baby at tonight's episode. It was so sad. I bawled.

Same here!

One of my favourite characters, too.

And the whole thalidomide story was heart-breaking as we knew it would be. Poor Dr Turner.

Agree it was really sad but Judy Parfitt's performance as Sister Monica Joan was amazing. It always seemed like she would die first and that Evangelina was such a rock she'd be there forever. Her reaction to losing her friend and sparring partner was incredibly moving.

I also agree about the show seeming a little different with so many of the original cast gone and I find the replacements to be hit and miss. Barbara is the one I find the least interesting as she's such a pale imitation of Jenny. Linda Bassett's Phyllis Crane is as head-strong and warm-hearted as Evangelina but is played by such a strong actress she brings interest to the show.

I also love Emerald Fennel's Patsy who's another interesting, spunky character who's story has been an enjoyable addition to the programme.

I really hope Nurse Crane is right in suggesting that Trixie might find someone new at Christmas. That would tie the show up nicely and would be richly deserved as Trixie has been such a trooper and I'd love to see her get her happy ending.

Did anyone else think that the Christmas episode will be the last? That's the impression I got from the voice-over. Sad the series are so short.

They've announced a full series 6 to be shown in 2017. I hope Miranda Hart can find time to film part of that series. The door is open for her to come back.

I completely agree about Phyllis Crane. This season, her character development was wonderful. It's a treat to get the viewpoint of an older character who's been around the block a little and is not a nun.

I was sad but relieved it wasn't Sister Monica Joan who I simply adore. I was surprised that Chummy didn't re-appear at least for the funeral. I don't think she was even mentioned this series, unless I missed it.

IIRC, there was a passing comment by her husband about being very busy out at the maternity home.

Thanks. I missed that.

reply

Yes. It's too bad that they couldn't have filmed a quick cameo with Miranda as Chummy and digitally stuck it in, even though filming was over. My hope is that she'll be in the 2016 Christmas special and we'll see some reaction from Chummy then.

I wasn't surprised Pam Ferris left the show, given that she missed the middle episodes of both series 4 and series 5. Her comments about the wimple/head dress are a big clue. The wording makes me think the limited ability to hear while wearing it made it hard to focus on the acting. She couldn't do her best job if she couldn't hear, so she cut her appearances on the show before quitting altogether.

I figured she'd negotiated with the producers for limited participation before deciding that she needed to leave. They couldn't have Evangelina leave the order -- it would be too unrealistic to have a long-time nun do that back in 1961. They couldn't recast the character or send her to "another location" because the audience would keep hoping she'd reappear. Killing her off was the only way to go, I guess.

I hope we now see Pam in other shows or movies.

"Many" of the original cast gone?? What is many? Jessica Raine left, trying to think who else has gone!

I was surprised by that comment, as well!

When you look at the cast list on IMDb, many have been around for the full 42 episodes (or very close to it).

Gutted. Fred fixing the bicycle saying, "I'm just doing what I do," sent me over.

Still crying as I type. I love Pam Ferris & just this morning finished her other series from early 2000's, 'Rosemary & Thyme' where she plays such a sweet person. I am gonna miss her so much.
Watching Rhode crying because she felt guilty over taking those pills that caused Susan's disability just gutted me because I know my Mum did the same thing when my brother was born with spina bifida & she found out later that if she'd only taken supplements if could have been so easily avoided. Life is so tough on some people. My heart broken for each and every character tonight.

It was a very sad episode. I knew someone was going to die, and guessed who it was, so when she sat in front of the fire, I thought Oh no Sister Evangelina isn't going to wake up. Then everyone dealing with the fallout from the Thalidomide scandal. It certainly was a tough episode to get through.

OMG I was bawling all over the place. Then when they placed her worn shoes on top of the coffin I lost my mind lol

Sad episode + ovulation = a sobbing crying mess ha ha

Me too. That and the part where Fred says "I'm just doing what I do." Then sister Monica Joan's reaction. I was a crying mess.

I really didn't see it coming that she was going to die. When she sat down in the chair by the fire, I knew she wasn't going to wake up and I thought, "NO! Don't tell me they're going to kill her off." She was my favorite. I really hate her being gone now.

Yes, it was tremendously sad to see Sister Evangelina pass away especially since she was one of the most beloved characters.

Several tissues were needed.
I love all the characters, Call the Midwife is an incredible show and doesn't always get the credit it deserves.

reply

Just so sad, when Fred came in early in the morning I knew he was going to find her.
Very beautifully filmed, very real reactions to all of the emotions stirred up between the death and the birth defects.

This show is so well done and I will miss it until Christmas special.

reply

I'm sad about Sister Evangelina also, she was such a great character. Maybe the actress wants to leave and they phased it out

reply

I'm not sure, but I think Sister Evangelina was a real person, not a creation of the scriptwriters. If my memory serves me correctly she did die and was buried in Poplar. So perhaps that was the reason for Sister Evangelia's on-screen death rather than Pam Ferris wanting to leave the show. Either way, it was beautifully done. The reactions of Sister Monica Joan and Sister Julienne as portrayed by Judy Parfitt and Jenny Agutter had me crying with them. Superb acting by all concerned.

Illustrates, also, just how respected midwives would have been in that part of the world and in those times. (Yes, I know it wasn't that long ago, but there was a lot of poverty in the East End.)
