2 Versions of "Gangsta's Paradise"

What's up with that cheap karaoke version of "Gangsta Paradise" at the beginning of the movie? When I first heard it I was like "oh! They couldn't get the rights to the recording!" But they played the Coolio version in the credits. So, what's with the earlier version? Could they not afford to play the recording twice? Who is performing the earlier version? Is this an inside joke? Is this for subtextual reasons? Is it monetary?

I thought I was the only one who recognized that too! It was weird because they played Coolios version at the end..
