Couldn't Arlo and Spot still hang out together? Just because they aren't living together doesn't mean they could never see each other again? Spot knows where Arlo lives, and could visit whenever he wants. Just seemed like a forced sad ending

Humans were a wandering species at the time. They were not rooted to 1 geographical location like Arlo was because of his agricultural enterprise.
