According to wikipedia Scorsese was originally supposed to direct.

He either read the script and realized how horrible it would be, or it would be interesting to see what he could have done with it. Not every Scorsese film is a homerun, but he has never produced anything close to as bad as this crap. I'm sure he would have forced a script alteration in a big way as well as many other things. He must not have wanted to go through the hassle, or there was pushback.

Also it claims this has been in development since 2011. It literally baffles me with all that time and with people that should know better, this is the final result. It just goes to show you how hard it is to make a good film. You can have talented people all around and still make something truly awful.

I remember Sean Penn was supposed to direct this film when it was first announced. I was very excited over that, if I must be honest. Then, the movie got stuck in development hell and then he left as well as Kristen Wiig. I knew I shouldn’t have had my hopes up after that. Although the film is indeed filled with talent, the end result is underwhelming.

I wonder how much better it would’ve been with another director and writing team. With Scorsese on board this would’ve definitely been the talk of the town. Sean Penn? I think he also could’ve put together something worthwhile. Oh well, this has great performances.
