Movie Plot not quite following the book plot....

I am always up for plot twists from book to movie however when you completely change the plot it worries me that it may fall short of following the path that the book follows..... Anyone else see this as a risky move?

How have they changed the plot? The plot they put under the 'Storyline' section of American Assassin's IMDB sounds exactly like the specific book this film follows.

Did you read the book? It sounds very different. The beginning seems the same, but when they veer off into the main "terrorist" plot line, seems like changes were made. Personally, I'm actually not worried about it. When I read the book, I questioned how it would translate to the big screen. And CBS Films did comment on Twitter (during the time when Kitsch was cast), that they were going to set the story in a more modern period, as opposed to the early 90's, with a more recent terrorist attack being the catalyst for Mitch's motivation to join the fight.

Edit: Here's the plot - http://www.comingsoon.net/movie/american-assassin-2017#k3CE97183e8AYJvW.99

Based on Vince Flynn's best-selling novel, "American Assassin" tells the story of legendary CIA agent Mitch Rapp. Cold War veteran Stan Hurley (Keaton) would be the most feared training officer in the CIA if more than a handful of people at the agency knew that he existed. As American Assassin begins, Deputy Director Irene Kennedy tasks Hurley with training Mitch Rapp, a black ops recruit devastated by the loss of his fiancée to a terrorist attack. As Rapp’s training progresses, the pair is dispatched on a joint mission with a lethal Turkish agent to stop a mysterious operative from starting World War III in the Middle East.

TeeFilms - I think the plot sounds totally different from the book. I've read about 6 or 7 books starting with American Assassin and I don't recall Mitch ever being on a mission with Hurley and definitely never with a "lethal Turkish agent". Rapp usually works alone, which would make for a pretty boring movie I guess. I can see how that wouldn't play well on the big screen. I can't actually remember the plot of the book and I didn't read it that long ago, but this sounds nothing like it. I don't really care 'cause I'm not a huge Vince Flynn/Mitch Rapp fan but the fans will be really upset about it. I mean, they are all in a tizzy because, from the one photo, Rapp does not appear to be left handed!!!!! OMG!!! He HAS to be left handed!!!!

reply

As a leftie I say it is about time we had our own action hero godammit!!!

I mean, how hard can it be to act left handed lol.

snappy_matt - I'm so sorry! I feel so bad. I guess I just live in my little right-handed world and never realized how under-represented the leftie community is in the entertainment industry. I don't care what the Rapp fans want but I can sympathize with you. It's too late for this movie but I will root for more leftie characters in the future!

reply

Thank you for your understanding, this is an issue I really need to get out there. The lack of left handed characters in Hollywood is truly shocking, a whole community is being discriminated against. I have personally been boycotting the Oscars for years but to no avail. Perhaps now this issue is getting some attention on the IMDb boards we might finally be able to shine a light on the discrimination and bring about change :-)

The movie plot was on Vince Flynn's website under the news of Taylor Kitsch being added to the cast. It's not the same as IMDb.

The production bulletin was actually updated with just a few more specific plot details - so - it does seem like they're changing it up, but I'm not too upset about the changes. I'll be happy if they get the essence down:

LOCATION(S): LONDON, ENGLAND, GBR / BUDAPEST, HUN
CAST: Michael Keaton, Dylan O'Brien, Taylor Kitsch
Follows the rise of Mitch Rapp (O’Brien) a CIA black ops recruit under the instruction of Cold War veteran Stan Hurley (Keaton). The pair is then enlisted by CIA Deputy Director Irene Kennedy to investigate a wave of apparently random attacks on both military and civilian targets. Together the three discover a pattern in the violence leading them to a joint mission with a lethal Turkish agent to stop a mysterious operative (Kitsch) intent on starting a world war in the Middle East. Everyone is missing the point. One of the best scenes in all the books combined is the interrogation of Stan Hurley by Assef Sayyed.

reply

That is the best scene! And I know most people wanted Bruce Willis as Hurley, but when I read that scene I could TOTALY see Keaton nailing that. I really wanted to see him do that scene!

reply

Maybe that scene will be in there!

reply

Rapp is supposed to kill the turkish agent then sit with him on the bench lol

reply

Flynn's book was a good starting off point but frankly the plot needed modernization and that will lead to changes.

reply

Its supposed to be Mitch Rapps back story... I see nothing wrong with setting it in the early 90's. Whats so wrong with the 90's I grew up then. You know brick phones, big hair and mullets.

reply

Yes, a series of books like what Vince Flynn wrote should mirror the movie and visa versa.
