Fantastic movie - but ruined by the ending...

I really did think the first 3/4 of this movie was borderline new classic...like "May" or "Human Centipede" or something. It was very fresh, and all the characters were interesting. The production was top notch - there was no B movie feel for me.

I loved Beatrice (was that her name?) the one with too many plastic surgeries...she was so disturbing, yet so cute with her Betty Boop voice. A perfect horror movie character.

Anyway - what the hell happened with the ending? It's like the crew ran out of budget and just said "well, that's a wrap! Let's end thing thing before lunch!"

There was zero closure on everything in the movie.

What happened to the quadrapelegic teacher?
What happened to the two girls who were beat up by the bf?
What happened to the twins who had arms switched? It would have been cool to see them, or at least some pics.
What happened to the guy who was kidnapped and beat up?
No happy ending. No sad ending. Nothing...just a horrible no closure ending that leaves the viewer feeling ripped off. I mean jeez...she was killed by a character that we didn't even get introduced to.

Sucked to end a movie this way, when the first part was so awesome.

I mean it looked like all she did was turn around and hug him. I must've missed something.

I agree with you. I was looking for more of what happened to some of the other characters.

I felt like the movie ended on a bad note - not just because Mary was murdered AND it was by a character we only briefly met (Ruby Realgirl's husband who we only saw a flash of when she revealed her modified body and he was repulsed and angry), but because there didn't seem to be a real conclusion to many of the offshoot story lines in the movie regarding other characters. I suppose that is the best we can get with a low budget indie film but the ending was a letdown.

American Mary is a decent horror movie that does something right: the lead character is both the most interesting and scariest part of the film. Unfortunately, in the third act - the final 30 minutes - the plot falls apart. It felt like the writers ran out of ideas and just needed a way to kill off Mary Mason. I agree, the ending is totally anti-climatic and unacceptable. A character like Mary Mason deserved a better death, one that stemmed more directly from her actions and the theme of the movie.

I think it should have had something to do with the weird German twins. That whole subplot was cool, but just kind of ended. Maybe their bodies could have rejected the arm exchange and they could have taken a twisted revenge on Mary.

I rarely say this, but I would love to see a sequel to American Mary that carries the premise farther. Mary Mason could be treated kind of like Peter Cushing's take on Dr. Frankenstein in the old Hammer Horror series. Of course, I can't think of any good way to bring her to life. Katharine Isabelle gave a great performance and I want to see more.

I didnt liked the ending either, but at least it didnt end with her being found out and arrested or killed during the arrest, that would be the standard and lamest ending for me.

I would have preferred her to have successfully stitched up herself, go to LA with Billy and have a sequel.

...a little fantastic, and fleeting, and out of reach.

Well said, evildead167. Couldn't agree more.

I thought it was really strange that she stitched herself up and then died anyway. That's not what I was expecting, but it wasn't shocking in a good way, just underwhelming.

What happened to the quadrapelegic teacher?

He died. After she killed the security guard and tasered Grant she went back to the club and Lance was talking to her. He asked her if she felt bad about the "two dead guys." Since we only saw her kill the security guard, we have to conclude that she killed Grant, too. The shock could have killed him because his body was not in a great state after her surgeries and living off an IV.

What happened to the two girls who were beat up by the bf?

Beatress is probably okay since she was able to call Mary and presumably 911 (how else would the cops have been to Mary's place?). As for Ruby, one could assume from him taking the knife that he was going to undo the work Mary had done to her genitals.

What happened to the twins who had arms switched? It would have been cool to see them, or at least some pics.

Those were the directors, they didn't have any actual body modifications to show off, unlike the other "patients" of Mary's.
Someone suggested a rejection situation by one or both of them, but that wouldn't happen with identical twins because rejection syndrome only occurs when the body recognized a foreign part. Genetically identical parts would not have any issue like that.

What happened to the guy who was kidnapped and beat up?

We have to assume Billy disposed of him. They had hinted that he had done that kind of stuff before.

The twins are shown leaving Mary's new house and getting in a cab after what seemed to be a follow up appointment. They still had bandages on their heads. It was stated before their first appearance that they would be in town only for a week, so I assume they got back to germany after the scene when they get in the cab, there was no way to show them fully healed because they would be in a different country when that happened.
I think they could have shown pictures of the healed twins in their website though, it would have been nice.

100% This. Felt exactly the same way like... whaaa?

I was disappointed by the ending as well. I wonder if this story would have worked better as a series instead of a movie. Parts of the story felt a bit rushed. Overall good movie though.

I agree. I wanted Mary to live and get away with killing Dr Grant!

I think he was the other doctor. I remember Billy looking at the computer with Mary being raped. Also, the detective mentioned the doctor disappearing.
