Why does anyone like this?

This isn't even as "good" as an Asylum movie, yet it has a 7.5/10 on IMDB.

Do the cast and crew have a lot of supportive friends and family, or do thousands of people actually like this movie?

Let me put it this way: Space Milkshake would actually work better if it had a laugh track. That should tell you a lot.

Thousands of people actually like it. Opinions are subjective, it's not a great mystery or conspiracy.

This film has clever writing, dialog, character chemistry and good direction. Four qualities missing from most (all if I'm being honest) Asylum films. But you know, that's just, like, my opinion, man.

I liked this movie because I accepted it for what it was, a low budget sci-fi comedy. The movie doesn't take itself remotely seriously, and neither should the viewer.

As for the laugh track suggestion, this is a movie, not a TV show, so adding such a thing would be very unnecessary and out of place.

I got this film solely because Amanda Tapping is in it. I'm half way thru it and I needed to pause and state here that William Boyd's character, "The Captain" is such a stupid pompous idiot that it is distracting me from the rest of the show. Admittedly this is a comedy.... a good example of why I generally avoid them like the plague...

Apparently so considering how high the rating still is. Shockingly high in fact, I just didn't see the appeal.

Because it's silly but fun, well made for what it is and has Amanda Tapping, plus Kristin Kreuk makes a very cute robot. My only critique is does anyone use an RS232 port anymore?
