How did Mud get to the island?

Watched this movie last night on Amazon Prime and I loved it. One thing bothering me though is, how did Mud get to that island?

It's an island so he didn't walk. He has no boat, hence why he needs the boat in the tree. The river is full of snakes so no way he swam, plus he has bread in his grocery bag and no way that would stay dry on a swim over.

The only person he trusts other than Ellis and Neck is his old friend Tom and Tom isn't aware he's there until Ellis comes to tell him.

So how did Mud get on the island?

Either whatever kind of boat contraption that he has sunk in the process of getting him there and he just swam the rest of the way or he had someone drop him off there.

I also thought about it. How did he get into that island and, more importantly, why did he chose to be on the island rather than in some more comfortable place?

He was on the island because he was avoided of the police, but I'm not sure how he got to the island. I always wonder how the boat failed in the tree.

My take was he swam and/or maybe had a log-floation type deal. Ellis offered to take him off in their fishing boat but he said no...he got there and he can get off. I took it that he chose that island (which Juniper also knew about, i think) because it was special to them as kids. Just my take!
