Why was May pearl such a bitch

I personally hated the way that May pearl treated Ellis like crap since I would have thought that Ellis might punched her out of anger or get some kind of revenge.

Well, she was a bit older than him. It didn't take long for her to realize she was dating a boy and not a man. She probably was in a relationship with one of her teachers or her pets. It is Arkansas after all.

Is it safe? What is safe? Is it safe? Yes, very safe? Is it safe? No, not at all! Is it safe? Aaahh!

There was an age difference, and I saw some peer pressure there, the way she ignored him on the street, it seemed uncool to be dating a boy Ellis' age. Plus, we see her with an older boy with a car, it's obvious she had better suitors than Ellis, although I'm going to say he probably had nobler intentions than the other boys

This world is a comedy to those that think, a tragedy to those that feel.

It's pretty simple if you think about it. Ellis seen what his parents were going through, and he heard the stories from Mud and Juniper. He was 14 and innocent and thought love was simple. He was infatuated with the story of how Mud protected Juniper. Remember how Ellis met May Pearl? He was protecting her. May thought it was cute and kissed him at the bonfire. But, never answered him when he asked her to be his girlfriend. She never gave him her number either. She said if you can find it then you can call. But she never answered after the bonfire. He tried to defend her again when he punched the older kid in the car. When she laughed at him and walked away. He said to her that he loved her. He was in the same shoes as Mud was when he was his age. Remember Mud was chasing Juniper for much of his life. Just a way to connect the characters of Ellis and Mud. That being the reason why he was helping Mud. The story dealt with many different relationships. I thought it was a great movie.

She wasn't. She's just a typical high school girl who's fairly popular. Tons of peer pressure. Plus she's out experimenting with a lot of guys. Even if Ellis was older she wasn't looking for a boyfriend. He was overly romantic in a naive way and thought a kiss at a bonfire meant you were boyfriend and girlfriend.

It's a good life lesson he learned, and like Mud said there are other girls. At the end he's getting attention already right after moving in.

The movie has tons of different relationships, and this one is about an innocent high school boy and his idea of love. He grows up a ton from the beginning of the movie to the end, and this is another part of that growing up.

^^^This^^^ I couldn't help but feel sorry for him because he took that so literally. At the same time, I loved his naivety.

Girls will always go for the guy with the greatest amount of social value. A senior with a nice muscle-car and good looking trumps a 14 year old boy that sells fish and gets in fights.

Life shrinks or expands in proportion to one's courage.

That wasn't a nice muscle car, that was a clunker

Ellis said in the beginning that they used to be in middle school together, so she's at best two years older...and he had a crush on her a long time. :)

I can understand her behavior later on, but there was a right way to tell Ellis what the deal was.
I agree that she went about it in a very mean way.

the moral of the story is that females will do you wrong, at least thats what I took from it. Even if Reese cried after Mathew dumped her, well yea she cried because she dint have her puppet to manipulate anymore. Hes better off with his pops who really does care about him. another moral, do not choose a female over your pops.

There was no throw away scenes or characters in this movie...A very tight script very little if no fat to trim.

May Pearl's character was symbolic of the idea of "Not being in love...but being in with the idea of being in love."
She was all about foreshadowing Juniper's character. someone who is willing to put up with a bunch of crap just to have somebody to hold and call their own. May Pearl was really quick to cling to Ellis though for a brief time, simply because for the short moment he showed he would stand up for her.

All the other boys just wanted to feel her up or whatever and she put up with it. She was the before to Juniper's after...

Juniper had put up with Mud and al his drama. She had been in abusive relationships, yet she's still out surfing bars looking for love.

In the same way...Mud was a foreshadowing of Ellis' possible path. Mud was accused of being a liar, bending the truth to tell tall tales. He was always on the run looking for the next big score or whatever...a drifter who had done his fair share
of dirt on top of a child-like heart.

Ellis was in danger of becoming Mud. He still had belief in ideal things we loose when we get older and make bad
decisions. His parents were showing him adults who give up and don't believe in ideal things like love.

Mud though he was not innocent impressed Ellis with his will and not giving up.

May Pearl was just Ellis' reflection of all that just like Juniper was Mud's
