This movie is a cheap ripoff of Tarantino and Rodriguez

Tarantino and Rodriguez had nothing to do with this movie but they used Danny Trejo in some of their films. So this is just a cheap attempt to capitalize on the name recognition by some other parties. What you end up with is some low budget film that pretty much sucks any way you look at it. I actually sat through the whole thing, and at best I could get sort of "moral code" angle out of the story... but it still just smells of desperation. On one hand, this is probably the fullest exploration of Danny Trejo as an actor, giving him a lead role and all. And so I take no real pleasure in saying this, but the result isn't very good and it will likely do more to cheapen his image rather than build on the success/recognition from Tarantino/Rodriguez productions.

thats like assuming that anything with Ethan Suplee or Jason Lee must be some sort of Kevin Smith rip off, cause they both pretty much got their start in a Kevin smith movie, and did a lot of work with him after that.

Except of course there is the fact that Trejo was acting a good 5-6 years before Tarantino/Rodriguez really began producing anything. The guy has been busting hump in the industry since '85, and has only really started gaining a name in the last half a decade or so. As opposed to 17 years ago when he did his first work with Rodriguez. Sure he was in Desperado, and only really remembered as the huge mexican with the tat's and knives. And maybe that was his biggest role to date, he did a LOT of bit parts here and there, since that was his 27th part in 10 years.

Also, Tarantino/Rodriguez do not own making retroey 70's/80's action flicks. Just because they did it with a bit more style and balls than most, doesn't make them the be all, end all of the genre.

As for this flick, it wasn't that freaking horrible. It was a lot better than I expected after watching a lot of Trejo's high billed flicks. It presented itself absolutely different than Machette did. It was worth watching if you are down with a Charles Bronson like kind of action flick. The writing was on par for the genre, and so was the acting for the most part.

now the glorification and raping of the whole Epic Beard Man thing is a whole different story. At least it doesn't say "Based On A True Story" anywhere i noticed.
