Payoff not good enough
The movie was great setting up the character (just the main guy, rest who gives a *beep* We didn't get expositions and lectures but instead we get to piece together this guy's past and why he's obsessed with wanting to finish this book for his next big hit.
The atmosphere was good, the home movie parts were legitimately creepy.
But then as the audience begins to worry about how this movie is going to end when it is near its final stretch...
Are we going to catch the bad guy? Is boogie real? Are the kids real or hallucinations? Is the Deputy So-So in on this?
We get this crap. An actual ghost did it.
I don't mind downer endings, I'm fine with scary movie that ends with everybody dead. Even in Paranormal Activity I was fine with "ghost killing everybody". But somehow this one end up rubbing me the wrong way. Maybe because he was investigating? And we were subconsciously fed that this was all done by a murderer, not a voodoo Jigsaw.
