Why was this movie so great?

Movies like that have been done a thousand times. Sinister was stereotypical as hell (like the beautiful wife telling the husband that she doesn't need it all and begging to just leave, 50% into the movie). Plus the fear-factor is almost guaranteed when the element of terror are kids.

I liked this movie. I just can't wrap my mind around why!? Any explanation?

I think it started out really great, and it went downhill after the middle.

I also felt that it was very stereotyped and full of clichés, but I think sometimes clichés just work. Dead children are always creepy, home videos with bad lighting and sound are always unsettling. Protagonist chasing after creaking doors with jump scares always work. Pagan deamons are usually a win too. What makes a horror movie good is succeeding in creating an unsettling atmosphere, regardless of the means. Is this a good explanation for you ? :P

Super 8 film, "realistic" portrayals of gruesome deaths that we always fear, fantastic soundtrack, and a mystique about the film that fills out the first half of the film (who could be doing this?), much like The Ring and Samara.

The first half was pretty good. And then it lost its mystery and scariness.
