goofy goth looking guys
Are not scary, menacing, or intimidating. They are just goofy.
Cool idea. Great looking film. But silly monster. The third movie should feature Abbott and Costello and do away with all pretense.

I agree. Whenever I see these so-called demons, I envision Sid Haig or Insane Clown Posse
"A naked American man stole my balloons"
An American Werewolf In London
The goofy goths ruined Mother of Tears for me as well.
It might have been more interesting to leave images vague, like the light and shadows on the grassy knoll which may or may not be hidden assassins. Is Ethan Hawke really seeing a demon or is he cracking up under strain? Leave that question more up in the air. Then for the final reveal, the demon turns, and it's got Hawke's face.
What are you talking about? There was literally nothing gothic about Bughuuls look. Black suit =\= goth.
