Plot hole???

My wife brought this up when we saw this movie in theaters and we have never seen it mentioned again, but when Ellison first brings Deputy So and So to his office to talk about the other murders; he has pictures on his bulletin board of those murders as they took place. The deputy doesn't seem to think it's weird that the one person asking him to look into these unsolved murders had several pictures of those murders being committed; which are not included in the police files or in any evidence that he uncovers. Lazy film making or did we miss something in our repeated viewings?

first thought that came to my mind as well. ESPECIALLY when Ellison decides to let dep. so so help and the first thing he does is go directly to that board.

Deputy So and So barely gets to look at the board for a few seconds before Ellison pulls him away so I doubt he had time to thoroughly look through all of the pictures. Even if the Deputy had noticed that the pictures were ones that shouldn't have been there he was infatuated with Ellison, I doubt that he would have wanted to press Ellison on the subject knowing that it would anger him and probably thought that if he just kept working with Ellison and helping him that he'd eventually be brought into the loop.

This could all be categorized under he is a crime author. He said he was doing research for his new book

Or did you miss the part where he mentions his occupation?

Exactly what I thought, although I guess it makes sense that Ellison is known for uncovering things the police had missed.
