Why did Bughuul have the children kill their families?
If he needed to consume their souls, what was the purpose of killing the families?

Not sure, maybe so no one would be looking for them?
shareThere was mention, I believe, of the need for blood sacrifice.

When in doubt, watch a movie!
Once certain, watch it again!
For sacrifice purposes (it's explained in the movie )
shareNono the sacrificing comes from the people who worship the deity. I think the answer of why kill the family is simple. He's evil as hell! Duh my goodness. Its like saying how come sometimes guys with masks rob a victim and then kill then for no reason? Happens all the time. Its called evil.

It is not explained in the movie. No where does it say the children need to sacrifice anything. As already said, the only sacrifice mentioned was from those who would worship the demon.
shareActually it said that in order to take the children there was the need for some sort of blood sacrifice, so he made the children do the sacrifice necessary for him to take their soul.

Pretty sure the reference was only when talking about those who worship the demon. Then the professor goes on to explain how the children were taken. But it does not mention the children sacrificing anybody, only those who worship the demon. The kids sacrificing their families is something not realized yet by the professor or anybody else. My point was that it does not mention anything about the kids sacrificing anything, only those who worshipped the demon to begin with.
shareThe professor mentions that 'the Bughuul lures or tricks children away from the physical world to trap them in his own netherworld where he consumes their souls over time'. The kids must have to kill their families before Mr Boogie can snatch them.
I'd give my left arm to be ambidextrous.

This would not make sense as he was already there once hawke saw him in the films. Recall that hawke saw him in his backyard right before his son was found outside having another night terror. Also recall that during every murder he was already there watching. And he was seen falling out of the movie that the taken children were watching in the attic right before hawke left the house.
share'Cause this is a horror movie's way of tying everything up and horrifying the audience.
shareI figured that was part of "consuming" their souls. You know, making them commit really terrible, inhuman acts.

I just answered a similar question a few minutes ago on another post --I thought pretty much what the above posters said, but here's my long-winded two cents if interested:
