Wife's Accent
Why did the wife have to have an accent? It was so distracting in my opinion, I hated everytime she spoke ; not to mention that she's a horrible actress.

I wasn't aware that her accent was suppose to be some sort of plot point. She had a English accent because the actress is English. Why should she change it to an American one? Like you said, it has nothing to do with the plot.
The difference between a lady and a flower girl is not how she behaves, but how she is treated.
My son who is Canadian married a girl from Hungary. Their kid has no discerniable accent and no traces of his mother's Hungarian accent. No difference than a Briton married to an American.

Is it really that difficult to comprehend that children have the accents from where they grow up? Just a little information for you, accents are not based on genetics. So it is perfectly acceptable that the children would not have the parents accent. If an American couple was to have a baby born and raised in England then the child would end up with a british accent, and vice versa. share
Agreed, although I can't quite put my finger on why, her being a brit was redundant and annoying.
shareShe does a bit of an American accent at the start but by the end has dropped it completely. It's not just any old English accent either, but proper RP, like the Queen, or Virginia Mckenna if you know who she is.
Successful English actresses are almost always quite posh - Winslet, Weisz, Knightley etc, but actually those lot are probably only middle class really: upstarts, while Rylance sounds properly upper class. Good on her. Towards the end of the film when I was losing interest, I amused myself by pretending she was Princess Diana.

Take it from a Brit, that was NOT an upper class accent.
It was a slightly bizarre quasi-Transatlantic English accent, the product of the actress picking up residual American inflections; substituting a "t" for a "d", for example.
Keira Knightley was brought up on a *beep* housing estate in bloody Hackney or something! FAAAAAARR from what I'd call posh!

shareShe shouted at everyone cos that's the lines she was given, that was the part she played that they wanted from her. The accent is irrelevant as loadsa people marry from country to country & wherever you grow up, that's the accent you have.
