The guys with machetes?

Were they a different gang come in to take advantage of the mayhem, or were they working for the main baddie? I thought they were a different gang when they started off killing the injured baddies and they had a kind of gang signature with the machetes. But then they were only looking for the police. I got a little confused.
Also, why would you start stabbing an apparently ordinary looking wall rather then looking for a doorway if you thought someone was in there?

To answer your first question, I believe they were a gang of tenants in the building who were enticed by Tama's offer of free residence to anyone who helped kill the cops.

To answer your second question, he didn't look for an entrance behind the wall because that would've made too much sense.

OK ta, that makes sense, I forgot that offer.

Tama's offer makes sense as to what drives them. As for the machetes, from what I understand there are many variations of silat (the primary martial arts form used in the movie) and one variation relies heavily on the use of machetes so they may just be a group who practice that style. Similarly there's another variation that relies heavily on quick stabs and slashes with semi large knives, and there's the hallway scene prior to that that relies heavily on knife play. I imagine in The Raid 2 we'll see some more variations of the fighting style.

That doesn't explain why they stabbed their own men to death and tortured one of the residents.

I was confused, too, and came here to get an answer. The only one that I can come up with is that they are a rivaling gang, but then they went for the cops as well.

I always thought they stabbed their own men to kick them while they are down and take what they are owned and so whatever reward would be divided amongst as few of them as possible.

I think the man who was stabbing the wall knew the building very well. So well in fact that he knew the (probably few) layouts the apartments had, if they had more than one. Knowing this, he's aware of the large gap between the walls (or that specific wall), knows there was no other area the police could be hiding in and decided to stab it.

We've met before, haven't we?
