this is rated higher than X
7.5 compared to 6.6
shareIt's actually a 7.3 now. MC doesn't update in real time, must update once a week or something.
Movies start high then go low. That's the norm. Pretty much every single movie drops notably when it becomes more broadly available (no longer exclusively in theatres) such as releases on home media and digital.
I remember X had a 7.2 or 7.3 when I first watched it (when it came to digital) and as you can see it's dropped to 6.6. I reckon Pearl will settle around a 6.3-6.7
I thought this was better than X so if the score rests a little higher than X I wouldn't be surprised.
shareI've noticed horror movies are subject to larger drops than most other kinds of films when they get their digital release and/or online leak. I also noticed the drop you mentioned with X, from a 7.3 to 6.6. This has already occurred with Terrifier 2, which went from a 7.3 to a 6.8 in just 3 days. I'll be curious to see how much Barbarian (which is my favorite horror film in years) drops after its digital release. My guess is that one will settle at around a 7.2 or 7.3 IMDB rating.
Pearl seems to be getting a slightly stronger reception than X (both of which were well-received) so I think it will end around a 6.9 or 7.0 IMDB rating.
Yeah horror tends to be quite a subjective genre with many films being 'love it or hate it'. All films drop but you're probably right that horror tends to have steep drop offs.
I haven't seen Barbarian yet but I'm looking forward to checking it out next week.
I prefer Pearl over X however I think it'll maybe drop a touch lower rating wise as X is quite a conventional slasher film and contains more nudity, more kills, more humor and an edgier plotline. Pearl operates largley as a character study with little in the way of kills or nudity and whilst it has a few funny scenes it felt like the comedy was toned down too.
It does something quite unique in making a horror film highly saturated and technicolor-esque with an almost whimsical tone. It does feel like The Wizard of Oz / Disney Princess flick meets horror. I've seen around 800 horror films and can't think of one with a similar aesthetic, that's why I really enjoyed it but I think the downtick in kills, nudity and humor will cause a bit of disappointment for some of the back of X. I've already seen people say they like Pearl but that they don't really consider it a horror film. People going in expecting X 2.0 or a typical genre effort could dislike it.
And i really dont know why. I found it rather boring. X was entertaining with some gore. This was just a messy, artsy wannnabe horror.
shareI thought Pearl was better than X. I liked the storyline much better and I thought Mia Goth's acting was actually very good.
shareBoth are underrated, in my opinion. I liked X more than Pearl but they are both in my top 10 of the year.
