First impressions of Jack Mooney

I thought he was good fun. As Florence stated, a little odd, but he seems enough of a laugh to be an enjoyable replacement for Humphrey when he leaves. It will be interesting to see how he fares on the island.

reply

I liked him. He seemed odd but capable. He seems alot more smarter and intelligent than he makes out. His quirkiness and innocence seems to be hiding a spark of something. Don't know how he'll cope on the island or how they'll manage with him having a daughter that age

But he's not Humphrey and Kris Marshall will leave a big hole

reply

Ahhh, maybe a touch (or a teensy smidge) of the Columbo about him. Someone the suspects would underestimate.

I do wonder if the daughter will tag along but she isn't as young as I thought she'd be when he first mentioned her, so maybe she'll stay in London? If she does join her dad in Saint Marie, they won't be using the shack, which would be a shame as it's such a familiar setting in the show.

reply

Yes, when he mentioned a daughter, I thought a child could make things abit different, but, seeing her age, I don't know if she'll go with him - except to turn it soapy with teen angst. I hope not. But it will be different - neither Poole or Humphrey had any real ties to England like a child would be

I love Columbo. He was always the smartest guy around no matter how he cleverly acted. Jack seems shambolic and quirky and slow, but, you could tell he had a spark and intelligence about him - like the cufflink scene and the school running scene. I hope they keep that about him

reply

Oh well. It seems the daughter will be tagging along. Abit disappointing. I have a dreadful feeling it's just an excuse to add soapy teen angst and romance stories

reply

The actress that plays the daughter is 23 years old, so it's unlikely they'll be any teen angst story arcs. More likely would be her being kidnapped or getting in some kind of danger that tests her father's resolve.

I've never seen O'Hanlon in anything, so I can approach this with an open mind (which was the same with Marshall and Miller - I'd never seen them in anything before DiP).

reply

I was already a fan of Kris after seeing him as a detective in Murder City so I loved him when he arrived so this will take getting used to. Hopefully not long

reply

I know it's early days but it seamed to be just a soft introduction to him. Ie no detective prowess, can only hope the writers are up to usual standard and give him more to do in part2 !
As for the daughter I doubt she will come .but who knows

reply

Isn't he just an extension of the other detectives? A hapless clumsy, yet likeable genius detective ?

The moment they introduced him, the writing was on the wall.

So, he will do just fine. .........

While it's all the same formula. If it ain't broke, don't try to fix it, I guess.

reply

Yes, I'm sure they want to keep some aspects of what we've had already in the main detective character. That's not a bad thing, most viewers would prefer the familiar and not want to see a vast change.

By the way, anyone else notice the names of the three characters all have surnames with double o's:

Richard Poole

Humphrey Goodman

Jack Mooney

It might not be anything other than a coincidence, I just thought it was a funny detail, hehe.

reply

That's cute LOL

reply

I'm not a fan (yet). I hope he grows on me (if he stays) but I wouldn't mind if they changed detectives each season.

reply

Darkshines, I love when people notice little quirks like that. Makes you wonder if it is done on purpose.

reply

Watched his first two episodes and found he writers haven't given him very much personality or development. They didn't even explain the transition.

While the first guy was kind of an awkward, rational analyst and the second an exuberant idealist, so far this one seems kind of a salt of the earth everyman.
