Because he is a good actor. Would you have said the same if they had cast Adam Sandler?

If Adam Sandler was 100% undetectable, yes. It wasn’t like your typical character role. It could’ve been any old mafioso stereotype - he didn’t really make the character special. He just seemed like a random person from The Sopranos or Boardwalk Empire.

Character actors like Daniel Day Lewis, Gary Oldman, hell - even Jim Carrey bring something magical and unique to the character. Penguin was just a standard mob-dude.

You’re saying it was a requirement he had to be famous. The role didn’t require a famous person or even an A-lister. Jeffrey Wright is not an A-lister and he got a major role. I’m just saying that there are lot of actors who could’ve easily brought that role to life for a lot less make-up and a much lower fee.

No, Penguin require a famous actor, because from the very start... before the movie relase... Warner already said they are making a show star Penguin. You need a famous actor to lead the show.

Look can't be recognize is not the point, the NAME need to be recognize, the best example is Jim Carrey's Grinch. No one can't recognize him in the movie, yet he took 20m!

Yes, he is b-list, that is why they ask him to play a SUPPORTING CHARACTER in big budget movie and STAR a tv series.

Colin Farrel has a ressurgence lately in some Netflix sci-fis (overlapping demographics with superhero movie watchers.)

Also he was Bullseye in DareDevil, so comicbook movies fans will recognize his name and think of it as an easter-egg.

And he's probably not that expensive. Sounds like a genius casting decission to me.

Not every name has to be Tom Cruise big. Nic Cage and Bruce Willis are big names. Pretty sure they're relatively inexpensive. You're just being ridiculous.

At the height of their careers they were far from inexpensive. Willis even got paid the biggest salary in history at the time for The Sixth Sense

Valid observation. I love Colin Ferrell. I thought he did a good job with this role too.

Maybe he petitioned the director for it?

Maybe he's trying to build up his character actor street cred for when his looks fade and he's no longer leading man material?

His agent is especially persuasive?

They have bigger plans for the character so maybe they needed someone with the reputation to be able to carry some future projects without the benefit of an ensemble cast?

Who knows? Who cares? Not me, I thought he was great, but, yes, a good character actor could have filled the role too.

I wonder if it was more of a bucket list thing for Colin. Thought he was great, though they should have left the mono brow on Joker as an actor's trademark.

So it's either a bucket list, or there's a future film involving the Penguin that has him involved.

I thought the same. I knew he was in it and had to wait for the credits. And then realized. That’s him. How invisible. I love him. Any recognizable variation. But that was poor use of Colin?? I couldn’t even recognize his voice.
