The Unrecognizable Colin Farrell as The Penguin Looks Just Like An Actor Named...

Richard Kind.

Not my idea. Some critic wrote this.

But he's right. And once you've read that and you watch Farrell as The Penguin...you can't get Kind out of your mind...

ecarle, as one of the few film critiquers whose opinion I can trust, did you see this new Batman film and do you have an opinion on it? Me, I'm reluctant to pay for any American film these days, especially superhero films. I have given serious consideration to investing my $ and 3 hours into this one, however.

That's flattering, thank you but I don't think I wish to carry the burden of recommending a film as "big" as The Batman. There are lots of comments all over this page to consider.

I will say this: among superheroes, I've always preferred Batman because he is NOT a superhero. He's becoming more Bond-like all the time -- gadgets and cars and aircraft. I also like Batman movies when Robin is NOT in them.

This is the first "stand alone" Batman since the Nolan trilogy ended in 2012 with The Dark Knight Rises. `10 years. I didn't catch all the variations with Ben Affleck in between, none of them seemed like "real" Batman movies. Affeck was practically a cameo figure in them, even when he starred in them.

So this is better than ten years of Affleck, or whatever it was. It also ups the ante on being more adult - a Batman movie that children simply shouldn't see. (The Riddler is a stone psychopath who puts the head of one live victim into a cage with rats.)

I also like how Pattison's Batman is a recluse and a bit of a psycho himself -- whose fighting technique trends towards the brutal, vicious and merciless. He gives individual bad guys a real beatdown.

I figure from here on out, Batman will be a regular feature of the film marketplace, like James Bond.

This movie is thus, a cog in that machine. There's nothing particularly new about it, but I got my money's worth.

Just like I used to with Westerns; Eastwood and Bronson action movies, and Schwarzenegger in his "B" period(Commando, Raw Deal.) Or still with Bond movies. Two or more hours of entertainment and action; I know EXACTLY what I'm going to get.

Stray thoughts: whereas George Clooney sounded just like George Clooney with the mask on, Pattison sounds just like..Christian Bale. Its as if the series just continued on with Bale when Batman is on the screen. As Bruce Wayne, Pattison is the weirdest Wayne yet.

And: the car chase in this one ain't much different than the truck chase in The Dark Knight.

That's all I got.
