That's awfully dissapointing.
shareHe's a villain. He's not supposed to look like a dude with such vibrant and sleek aesthetics. The look is very realistic and menacing.
shareHe looks like a wrestler from the 80's..
shareThat doesn't make any sense. He looks like a genuine terrifying serial killer.
shareAgreed. He looks like exactly who you don't want to find waiting for you in a dark alley. Put him in tights and a cape and you'd laugh.
shareAnd yet im assuming people are complaining that oh he just looks like a basic garbage man. I don't understand why people want this character who represents a serial killer to have some well put together flashy outfit. The look on the riddler is perfect.
shareI mean, you see this guy at your door you think you're getting a singing telegram:

He doesn't look menacing he looks goofy
shareThat looks pretty menancing to me. Your telling me that if a guy dressed like that were to show up at your front door, you wouldn't be terrified at all? I don't know but I would freak the hell out.
shareYeah if Ronald McDonald shows up at my door wielding a gun I'll be terrified too! That does not mean a villain dressed like Ronald McDonald with a gun is menacing. It's still goofy.

Menacing? He looks like a cheap wanna be terrorist impersonating one of the Minions !
shareI guess you missed the whole persona of The Riddler.
The Riddler is NOT a brute force, menacing villain.
They could have given him any damn costume or clothing slightly green and put a "?" on it and boom.. you get a Riddler, I suppose.
But this garbage man disguise is ridiculous indeed. Hopefully this is his dawn-of-criminal-career costume and is going to end up with a more polished one.
The look of it is realistic. Listen many people including you can hate on this film all you want but this genuinely looks better than a majority of comic book films out there.
shareRealistic as in "I need to disguise myself for cheap", sure. Or as in a temporary first costume, maybe. Even if it's realistic, it still looks goofy. I agree with OP about this.
Look, I'm not hating on the film. I state my honest opinion on a character. I also disagree with you about this movie looking better than the majority of comic book films but that doesn't mean I hate on it. The hating may come later, after viewing. But for the moment I am forced to admit that what I see about The Batman is more disappointing than exciting, for me personally.
Sure you might have your concerns but I'm honestly really curious about all the reasons why you think this looks disappointing as opposed to being excited about it. I personally see no flaws from anything surrounding this film. That doesn't mean it's gonna be great right off the bat. We'll have to wait and see the film first of course, but everything just looks spot on so I'm curious to know why your not very optimistic about this one?
shareOne of my problems is the casting. Bruce Wayne looks like a little emo b*tch. And Pattinson is.. Pattinson. I never liked him. I have a hard time shaking off who's behind this Batman's mask and taking him seriously... especially with how "Twilighty" Bruce Wayne is portrayed here. Also we get yet another romance thing with Catwoman... nothing we haven't seen a couple of times already. The Riddler, well, we already know what I think about how he looks but I find he seems like the most important and solid character to date. The movie (with the trailers as of now) have that same terrorist like intrigue as The Dark Knight in 2008. So again.. déjà vu. I find the batmobile to be disappointing also. What else? The dark, steam punky atmosphere is nothing surprising or new either. The images I saw look a lot like the previous instalment with some scenes that have a little of Tim Burton's Gotham added to them.
So I think my main issue is that I feel there's nothing new. Nothing that's going to surprise me or will make me go "whaow". It's like everything we've already seen before, chewed up and spit out again with new actors to make us believe it's something new. It's like Batman Returns (Pengouin and Catwoman) mixed with the Christian Bale trilogy (atmosphere, and picture/photography).
In other words, the whole of the movie better be exceptionally damn good to make me forget all the things I just told you. On a positive note, the photography, the way the scenes were filmed looked very good. Zoe Kravitz' acting seems decent enough. And the music in the trailer was very good also.
So there you have it. The reasons why I'm not expecting to be impressed.
I honestly really dig the "emo" Bruce Wayne look. It looks dark and mysterious. In regards to Pattinson, I have to disagree here. He's a good actor and great choice for Batman. Sure he starred in Twilight which is definitely one of the worst franchises of all time but it wasn't his fault those films were bad. It's all about the script. He was great in films like The Lighthouse, Good Time, and Tenet, which shows he can play a wide variety of different types of roles very well.
The catwoman romance really hasn't been established in live action since Batman Returns. There was no romance between the two in TDKR besides the ending. So I'm definitely looking forward to see a new modern take on it in this film. The chemistry between the two looks pretty similar to Arkham games which I love and it shouldnt be an element that weighs down the quality of the film.
Again I have to disagree on the riddler. Paul Dano is a great actor and the look of him looks dirty and realistic which I like a lot. And sure the whole terrorism type plot this movie seems to be going for is similar to Nolan films but that's what a majority of Batman villians are like and the Riddler looks to be established as more of a serial killer.
I'm not too crazy about the look of the batmobile either so I'll give you that.
In regards to the dark look and the atmosphere, thats what Batman is supposed to be like. You don't need to change that up. Sure the Burton films had that look but they lacked the substance that was in the Nolan trilogy. The Nolan trilogy also lacked the dark and Gothic atmosphere featured in Burtons films. It was more sleek and modern looking for the most part. Now this film seems to be merging both elements of the style and substance together which is great. This looks a lot like the Arkham games which imo is the best representation of Batman from the comics. So yeah this something we really haven't seen before in live action.
He was great in films like The Lighthouse, Good Time, and Tenet, which shows he can play a wide variety of different types of roles very well.
Why do people keep using non-sequiturs as a reason for Pattinson being a good choice for Batman? Yes, Pattinson was great in Tenet, better than the miscast lead. However, nothing about his performance in any of those films make him a good pick for Batman.
Lol it does look pretty bad. Looks like the zodiac killer, but I guess that was the inspiration instead of the comics.
shareYes, you're right about Riddler looking like the Zodiac Killer. If that was indeed the inspiration, I think they should have kept that newly created appearance for a new character (in this movie or another without any ties to Batman or even superheroes).
The way this portrait is lit/taken is why he looks so stupid. Given the proper lighting and setting he'll look much scarier. As far as realism goes, look at the original Zodiac killer because they're clearly referencing him.
shareHe looks like antifa
shareHe kinda looks like Bane from The Dark Knight Rises. I don’t know why DC movies post-Nolan are still afraid of using comic book designs for their villains, Marvel has shown that it works. They can tweek the design if they need to, but this? What even is this?
The Batman Arkham games have shown that having a classic-inspired Riddler works in a gritty setting. He has a distinctive design, use it.

Those pics are both AWESOME. Thx for the links
shareBe honest, those both like ridiculous. In a comic book? Sure. Those are built around lurid, bright images that pop off the page and appeal to kids. On a big screen, it always ends up looking ludicrous. Remember Jim Carrey's Riddler? Or the Riddler in the old Adam West shows? Comedy. This film seems very rooted in real life, and seems to be approaching Batman from a standpoint of how he would integrate into a realistic world, much like the second of Nolan's three films. The idea that a serial killer/psychopath would don tights and carry a cane shaped like a question mark when committing crimes is silly beyond belief.
shareIf I thought they looked ridiculous, I wouldn't have posted them, and he's not wearing tights in either picture. The idea that a man would spend thousands of dollars to dress up in bat-themed tights is silly beyond belief, but the movies made it work. There's no reason it can't work for Riddler too.
I think they'd look good in a live-action movie, he'd still look like the Riddler, but with just enough changes in the design to pull off the dark and gritty feel they're going for.
No one is saying he should wear tights but they could give him a suit similar to the one Killgrave is wearing in Jessica Jones (which looks very similar to the comics) but in green https://i.pinimg.com/236x/b7/9e/7e/b79e7e1720994a6f8f82aad15db4f3d7--the-netflix-netflix-series.jpg
but no instead they gave him this silly goofy look that made him look like he just got out of a sewer , but whatever , people are happy with anything they throw down their throats nowadays.
This movie is cheap just like how cheap look all characters.
It just comes off as comical when they try that. Think real world for a moment. Do you think John Wayne Gacy, Ted Bundy, the Zodiac Killer, or any serial killer ever wore a themed costume, or tights, or a suit covered with question marks or some other logo? That looks completely silly. A sociopath who kills for pleasure will either want to look innocent, on order to sneak up on a victim, or frightening, to inflict terror upon them. The character in the trailer is the latter. If I woke up to find myself tied up with that guy pacing and muttering nearby, I'd be terrified. If I woke up to find some guy in a comic book costume I'd at least feel I had a chance to escape alive.
shareExcept what's NOT real world about the photo LanceDance posted here?
https://wallpapertops.com/walldb/original/2/b/a/786950.jpg
It's a guy in a question-mark t-shirt not unlike a Hawaiian shirt. It's something you might see some bum wearing in L.A., or New York. It's not anymore "completely silly" than these people:

In fact, the Asian guy is wearing a hideous floral shirt not too dissimilar than the Riddler picture above. A guy in a grimy, question-mark t-shirt could work as a serial killer in a more authentic nod to the comic character than the garbage man getup.
It's the prop he's holding that takes it over the top, but as you pointed out, the shirt makes him look like an inept tourist rather than a sinister villain.
shareRemember this guy?

Perfection ;)
LOL
He looks almost as menacing as this guy:

The point is: The Riddler doesn't need to be menacing. He doesn't rely on brute force but on wits.
you practically ask a chess player to look like a wrestler ... not in the job description.
It looks like they're selling Riddler action figures , kids are never gonna buy this abomination lol
