I watched the pilot again after the finale...

and the definitely retconned Charlie and Mackenzie's relationship in the finale. I know it can be argued that there is no definitive proof that he knew her in the pilot, but the way he talked about her to Will sure made it seem as if knew her well. Also, there was also the case of Mackenzie having given Don his first internship. Based on the finale, Mackenzie has never worked at ACN so it is by coincidence that she gave Don an internship who ended up being Will's EP at ACN before Mackenzie.

Charlie knows Will - so he probably knows all about Mac through stories that Will has told him.

He was the Jim before Jim came along :) the internship could've been at a different station and he just followed Will. (I have to go back and watch the pilot)
