This is Hollywood scraping the bottom of the barrel

Are there not any people in Hollywood with class who write, direct, produce, or act in a movie that has depth, character, classiness? What a cesspool Hollywood has become

reply

This is a movie based on facts. Ben Lewin - director - also had polio.

The OP probably thinks that all of the superhero movies out there are the height of film-making.

Or OP is a religious wing-nut. The movie was about s-e-x, so it's dirty.

His/her opinion fits the definition of puritanism: the haunting fear that someone, somewhere is having fun.

reply

Apparently you haven't seen many movies.

well, not only do I stand by my OP, but the responses I've gotten prove my point even further. Humanity has become a cesspool

You didn't need the replies to know that. You could just look at yourself in the mirror.

Your OP is not only stupid and limited but it's also factually wrong. How about that for a cesspool? Please don't have kids. Please?

Much of Hollywood has become a cesspool. There is no denying that.

However, after you get past the "grand spectacles", you get a solid two or three layers of films that are about real characters with real thoughts and desires. These films are a truer reflection of how diverse and how different we all can be.

In this film, you had a main character who had a desire. He was severly limited, yet he wished to have some of the same opportunities that "normal" people had. He found help in a person that was willing to do their job and provide him with his solution. The fact that it was sex is obviously your issue.

Well, sex is important. It is the driving factor for many of us, whether we know it or not. Why sugercoat it or cover it up in metaphors or insinuation?

Now, the film could have been more. It could have been more about Helen Hunt's characters feelings on having sex with a disabled person. But the movie wasn't hers. It was his. So we saw it from his point-of-view.

He wound up happy without destroying other people. Who can ask for more than that?

You are entitled to your opinion and I would agree with you but not about this film. The world has changed and the realities of life are more out in the open. This movie was a wonderful story of one man's journey through life, severely disabled and still managed to find the humor in it. It was a close up and personal look at the real life and emotions of a man struck down physically at too young of an age and how he managed to find love anyway. Such truth and honesty no matter how raw should be praised when put up against the usually useless trash and violence of most movies today. The sex here was honest and not done for salacious reasons or to titilate the audience. Wonderful movie.
