The iron lung

There's something I didn't understand in this movie: he needed an iron lung at home to breathe. How could he live without one when he went out and had his sessions with her? He occasionally breathed into a tube, but what kept his lungs moving?

I'm not 100% on how the Iron Lung worked, but he did say he could be out of it for up to 4 hours at a time.

Usually the patient sleeps in the iron lung for convenience. (Negative pressure). During waking hours they use the more modern positive pressure (the tube he uses to breathe periodically) during the day. I am a nurse and I have seen one iron lung in my entire career. Also he can go without artificial respiration for short periods as he indicated.
