Macy's priest character living vicariously through Hawkes character?

when you see Macy's priest character go through different emotions when the idea was first broached to him, I wonde if he was replaying the frustration he felt and now one of his peers in celibacy was getting a way out of that. And then Macy's character is into the confessions big time. At that point, it is obvious, in addition to being compassionate priest, he is also living vicariously through Hawkes as he can't do the sex thing for other reasons.

I don't know if I'd call it "living vicariously" exactly but I think there is an obvious connection because he can relate to Mark in many ways. I'd have loved to have his perspective more when they were having conversations but I understand it might have distracted the audience from the main story, which was Mark's.

Living vicariously through their parishioners seems to be fairly typical of priests – at least as portrayed in films.
