Woody needs to stop acting
Stay behind the camera, dude.
I'm happiest...in the saddle.
Well, Midnight in Paris didn't need him at all to be a great movie. So, I think I agree.
shareHe told scoop would be his last one but now I hear he is also in To Rome. I havent seen the movie, I dont know if its a big role but I hate it when actors tell they are quilting and then dont.
shareI have to say, I agree. If not only because I get tired of consistent neuroticism, it's because it destroyed a lot of his movies. For example, I couldn't get into Annie Hall because I couldn't see the half a dozen women that threw themselves at him because "we're attracted to brains over looks". Yeah, brains cause women to drop their pants. And with Broadway Danny Rose, there were scenes that felt that he was playing out his fantasies on screen, which just made it even more uncomfortable knowing that he consciously wrote this to be played out on screen. Then came Anything Goes, where the entire opening act basically revolved around "this really brilliant guy I met in the park". Can one person kiss their own ass enough when they write parts for themselves? That's why I can't stand to see him on screen because his pretension comes out even stronger than ever, negating his neuroticism.
That being said, I didn't wholly hate seeing him on screen in To Rome With Love. At first, it was really difficult because I thought "oh, good, more of the same Woody Allen routine I can't stand", but then the movie took a more lightened tone and I didn't feel like he was completely being revered by everyone in the movie or setting up situations to have beautiful women paw at him. If it's one thing I can't stand in a movie, it's pretension, which is the same reason I hate Terrence Malick and Lars von Trier. There are people out there who love those two and love to see Woody Allen on screen, but me personally, pretension is just such a displeasing thing to see on screen.
Agree with your points. I like his recent films a lot better when he's not acting in them.
