Joi and the question of soul

I get that she's a program, but I wonder if she's supposed to be an adaptive ai that actually begins to have feelings for K. She's pretty convincing, asking to be put on the handheld device and all. If she truly develops feelings for him, it adds another layer to the question of soul. The same thoughts were provoked in me after watching Altered Carbon.

Joi is there as contrast. She really is unreal and not human and robot. K is a real man who was made to feel that he was a monster.

reply

K/Joe is a replicant

reply

K/Joe & Joi and the question of soul you mean

reply

I think it's all part of her programming to convince the customer she cares. That's why 'Joe' has an epiphany when the giant advertisement of Joi calls him Joe (she calls everybody Joe; like a call girl who somehow has an orgasm with every client she sleeps with...).

reply

Quite plausible BUT...

What would be a better sales technique than building an AI that is designed to start ACTUALLY caring about her owner?

Thus, the inevitable "leaks" of the fact that the ai really does care in every case, becomes an additional reason for ALL the owners to realize that the caring is real and to thus bust their asses to pay for ALL the upgrades to give a better experience to the "woman" that really does love them.

Real love, for sale, upgradable. Nothing is colder and more cyberpunk than THAT. imo.

ps. Loved the real women street walkers than couldn't compete. I fear that might actually be our future.

reply

Yes, that's certainly possible. The blind guy in charge of the corporation seems like someone who would come up with something like that.

reply

This is it i thought the part of him walking around and seeing the giant version was there to confirm they all act and speak like the one he had. It even states they will tell you everything you want to hear.

This moment i think is actually the catalyst for him to do what he ends up doing. He realizes all the AI is ultimately bullshit and being a 'true person' is doing something selfless like Batty from the first film. He goes against his programming

There's no reason to believe that a "machine" made of flesh, that is a human being, would have more of a "soul" than an AI "machine" made of electronics. At some point AI beings would be as sentient as we are.
