I know that Johann Johannson is "his" composer...


but really, couldn't Villeneuve have got Vangelis back? I wouldn't mind so much if Johannson were right for this project, but most of his music that I've heard isn't melodic at all. It's basically just augmented ambient sound.

If you don't think Johansson's music is melancholic, just listen to his score for The Theory of Everything. He's one of the most diverse composers in Hollywood. He can easily pull off Blade Runner's unique sound.

Was surprised to see his name for the Sicario music as it just didn't sound like the stuff ive heard before from him.

I've not heard much but the album Dis of his was electronic sounding and IBM one was melancholic to be sure.

The BR soundtrack was part of what made the film and is legendary is a shame Vangelis can't/won't return but hopefully this guy can cook something up as thats part of why the film will succeed or fail for me.

Ridley Scott said in the audio commentary of Blade Runner Final Cut, that Vangelis don't really like his own musical work on Blade Runner. I guess there was never ever a chance of getting Vangelis back.

As I see it, Vangelis is essentially retired.

As to Johannson, my main concern is that a fair amount of his incidental music tends to blend into the background. It may augment the film well, but it is also forgetful.

One of the great things about Vangelis was that he was bold and original in his compositions for film, and stayed true to his sound. So much of music today in films sounds overly processed, edited, mimicked, even canned. Johansson has avoided this fairly well, and stayed fairly true to himself, but I don't see him creating something that matches the majesty and ground breaking work of Vangelis. An impossibly tall order perhaps.

You have a really skewed view on how filmmaking works. He can't just snap his fingers and make Vangelis score the film just because phonenumberofthebeast wants him to.

Vangelis is hardly the talent he once was. To put it bluntly he sucks now. He isn't capable of scoring a film, let alone matching his masterpiece from 1982. Johannson was the correct move.

You say "now" but he hasn't done much film scoring in the last decade. The last film of substance he scored was Alexander, which I admit his music didn't really stand out, but the film was so wreched, whatever he did or tried to contribute, was wasted. That was over 12 years ago.

There are other credits, but most are "soundtrack" related, using pre-existing music, and the few works otherwise have been documentaries or shorts, and the music minimal, hard to find, or unreleased. There was a stage presentation of Chariots of Fire he re-worked some music into. I wouldn't call that new though.

As far as a I know, the only studio album he's done in the last 15 years was Rosetta, which is new in 2016. While I would call it subdued, and agree it's not groundbreaking the way much of his work 20-30 years ago was, it still has his sound, is almost entirely electronic unlike some of his other recent works, and I think to say it sucks, or he now sucks based on this work, would be a great disservice.
