Acting technique question

When searching Google for my answer, I failed to ask the question correctly; if possible please assist.

When an actor breaks a role, what is the name of the technique where the audience is then addressed? At the conclusion, the individual returns to the scene, which is then completed.

Breaking the Fourth Wall...

There's several terms for what you're describing. It's often referred to as "direct address", "breaking the fourth wall", or "an aside".

Soliloquy

A soliloquy is talking to yourself, expressing your thoughts aloud. When Frank breaks the fourth wall he's clearly addressing an audience (he even says things like "you though I'd forgotten about you" directly to screen). So in that way they're two slightly different things.

reply

What are some other shows that do this?

reply

Modern Family has the couch confessionals

reply

in modern family it's actually interviews because the show is a mockumentary, characters often look to the camera and at moments even speak to 'the person who shoots the documentary' (remember 'I taught her that!'?), it's not breaking the fourth wall because they do not talk to or look at the audience but rather the cameraman/interviewer like in a real documentary.

reply

Not according to TPTB
"Its a conversation we have a lot," he said. "Is it a true documentary, or is it a family show done documentary-style? I prefer the latter because I dont like those families who let cameras in their houses in real life. I just cant stand those shows. So it makes me it would make me question them a little bit. Who would allow all of this to be filmed by a crew? So I like the idea that its just our style of storytelling."
