I didn't catch the meaning of that interaction at all. Before she had a chance to drink the shot or pay for it she was off in Amy's rental car. What did I miss?

It was meant to funny because she asked for a "small glass of..." Instead of a "shot of".

She obviously feels that a shot of alcohol is unclassy and tried to elegant it up.

Just like shopping at Targe' instead of Target.

Actually, I think it was because, for her, a "shot" wasn't enough. I'd guess a "small glass" might be 2, 3 or more shots-worth.

yep, she even says, "Tryin' to keep it classy." when he clarifies, "So, a shot?" It seems she is a trifle embarrassed to be ordering a shot of tequila in the daytime, also stressed about her life situation, her daughter, and probably somewhat nervous about going to see her family.
