I can compare the anti climactic ending to....

I enjoyed the verisimilitude of the experience. I empathized with all the characters. The performances are brilliant. My one gripe is the anti climactic ending. I was emotionally invested in the story. I went along on the arduous journey because I was concerned for the professor and the prostitute. The anti climactic resolution ruined the movie. All the events leading to the resolution were pointless. It's like getting seduced by a scandily clad woman, getting invited to her place at night, only to discover her lying asleep in bed just like the hooker. What a disappointment.

You make of it what you will.

I saw the movie going downhill from about 20-30 minutes in. And it doesn't help that the ending also happens to be ambiguous given that it's not clear whether whatever smashed his window (rock, bullet?) has gravely wounded him or if he has simply fallen over in fright.

By the very fact that the movie ends the next second i believe the director's point was that he was dead (and shot).

If he just avoided a "rock", then ending the movie at this point is meaningless and without any weight.

I don't think he was shot, or gravely injured. I would have preferred to see more (it felt like a 9/10 up to that point but dropped to 8/10). But I think the gist is that he is in a very perilous and stressful position yet cannot call the police because of the negative publicity it would create that he was with a call girl. A real pickle.

More rhetorical than anything, but:

If you enjoyed the verisimilitude, then how could you be disappointed by the ending?

reply

For me, because I wanted the verisimilitude to continue.

reply

Hardly an anticlimax! It was like a bolt from the blue. It was the very last thing I was expecting. I was willing the old professor to call the cops, but he was so confused, he didn't know which way was up any longer.
