Liv's trying to ride Mellie into the WH, but...

...she actually had the WH through Fitz and left - because she is a hot mess. She's desperate to get into the White House politically but she literally had the Oval under her Jimmy Choo shoes. (Were they Jimmy Choo's? lol) Remember the episode when she was standing on the Oval insignia and drinking Fitz's brown liquor and having him take dictation? She left the WH and the man who loved her and wanted a drama-free life with her for...what? Freedom to..? Become the third side of the sick triangle that is Papa Pope, Jake and her? Yep, that's sure a big improvement! (Not.) I just really find it hard to take Liv's determination to regain the Power of the WH, through Mellie of all people, seriously when she had all that and more in the palm of her hand and dropped it like a hot potato. What a ditz!

Other than that, Mellivia is actually amusing to watch these days. lol

I do wonder if mellie could be a decent female president.

but you have to remember Liv didnt realize she wanted it until she left. That was the whole point. having the Oval and leaving made her realize she wanted it.

reply

She also wants it without the strings of being tied to the grown baby Fitz and playing house. While she wanted to yield power, Fitz wanted to cuddle.

If she gets in again, she'll still be dealing with a child. A more mature child, but still a child. While Fitz is an obvious baby, Mellies like a rebellious unpredictable impulsive teen.

reply

An impulsive teen in 💜 who won't do everything Liv wants her to do like Fitz would have. Good luck with that, Liv.

I think if the show wants to spin it like Olivia only wants power, then dealing with Fitz was a small price to pay when she already had it. She wouldn't have to play house or cuddle, and Fitz - the way he's written now - would accept it somehow, some way. After all this is the same guy who sadly shrugged off her abortion. Liv could probably kill Baby Teddy, express fake remorse, and Fitz would comfort her. So no one in their right mind would walk away from "power" like Olivia did - to happily go back to an apartment from where she recently suffered the trauma of being kidnapped and held captive. In other words, Olivia lacks common sense.

It makes no sense that this professional bulldog DC fixer who’s been around the block many times didn’t know she wanted the WH while she was in it. This was basically a clumsy reset button. Split Liv and POTUS apart romantically and physically for good and then make the WH the holy grail Liv “suddenly realizes” she must have, when a minute ago she already had it. Not a perfect analogy but to me it’s like someone climbing 95% of Mt. Everest, but going back down at that point because she doesn’t want to reach the top with her current partner - because he's childish or whatever - and then once at the bottom she's eager to start all over again with a different partner, who is more difficult to handle than the first. It’s nonsense.

Yes! To all of this!

Very well said. I completely agree, and all of this makes it seem like Shonda & co. just think they can throw anything on paper to reset and recreate OMG in moments in an effort to drag out more seasons. The only explanation I can imagine for this to be intentional plotting and make a modicum of sense, is for Olivia's reason for leaving behind the power she already had at the WH with Fitz to be because she knew if she kept it, it would destroy her and Fitz forever and the relationship could never be rekindled down the road if she felt so inclined. The longer she stayed with him in their WH situation, I guess the more she felt she would come to hate and resent him. Maybe she actually did love him enough to be more interested in preserving some sort of connection to him than in wielding and maintain the power in that way at that time. If she left while she still loved him (if you believe she does), then she could still maybe have that again at some point down the line, and so then come at the WH from the outside and from another angle, which would still leave open to her the option of having BOTH, on her terms, in the future.

I'm really reaching here because I haven't seen Olivia's love for Fitz since...forever. But it's the only other explanation I could think of for why she would leave when she already had what she wants so badly now.

reply

Yep! I agree with every word. She could totally kill Baby Teddy and Fitz would forgive her and give her a big hug. Even the other characters know she's got him unbelievably whipped no matter what.
