Baytown Outlaws and the 'Video Store Test' *** Minor spoilers ***
Well, it's kind of a shame that I still go to a video store, and kind of a bigger shame that more people don't, and most of all that there will be no more video stores in the near future.
I really liked the Baytown Outlaws when I first watched it. Then weeks and months have passed since it was released on video and as of yesterday, it was all checked out on the wall at my local video store... about 8 slots.
This type of movie always gets my attention, because it must having something going for it to have been out for about 4 months and be still completely checked out. It's a 6.1 rating on imdb, but based on the "video store test", this says much more than its rating.
When I watched the movie again and I really see what the appeal is. This movie has all the elements to make a great series. All sorts of character growth, the Oodies learning to be better people, the "Ivy league" Dea Agent getting stuck in Alabama, maybe losing his wife, learning to be more... Grayer??? Maybe ultimately teaming up with the Oodies, winning his wife back??? Eva Longoria's character becomes more "Carlos like", we have to question that. All the while the Oodies are the "real people" that we relate with and they keep everyone level. Who knows... maybe rob narrates and we don't know until the end... no one realizes how much he can understand. It would have a lot of possibilities for viewers to question what's really right and wrong.
Anyway, my video store will go away soon and I'll be online. I already check out ratings, mostly on this site, since I think it is the most accurate, but I will surely miss "the video store test".
You keep a tuna fresh... people will keep comin' back.
