Jess is in Jury Duty but obviously there was a reason for writing her off the show for so many episodes?

She was on maternity. They filmed three extra episodes in sporadic order at the end of season 4, when she wasn't too pregnant. So the fourth episode in S5 is actually the premier. Megan Fox filled in for her for 5 episodes.
Funny enough, Megan was scheduled to return in S6, but is on maternity.
