I feel like the show shouldn't even be called New Girl in season 5 when Jess is absent for several episodes due to jury duty. What was the real reason for Zoey Deschanel not being in those episodes?

She was pregnant at the time. The writers did not want to make Jess pregnant as well, so they just gave Zoey a leave of absence until she had the baby.

When you think about it the title of the show was even more fitting in Season 5 because Regan actually was a "New Girl".
