Jess's best boyfriend?

I think Nick for the chesmitry, but I personally think Sam was perfect and he's also a doctor.. plus he is hott

John Cho had the best potential but really i haven't really liked any of them, though her English teacher boyfriend was alright.

reply

She had the best chemistry with S1/S2 Nick. Present-day Nick, not so much, but neither of them is particularly likeable this season.

I always had a soft spot for Russell. Probably the best of her non-Nick boyfriends.

Sam doesn't qualify as a "best boyfriend" in my book since he didn't care about her feelings at all the first time they got together, although he was admittedly upfront about that. The 2nd time they got together over a restraining order so that completely killed any of his likeability for me.

Ryan was a human pile of saltine dust. They made the most sense together but he was just so damn bland it actually made me quit watching the show in S4 around LAXmas. It was like she was dating a cardboard cutout of "the perfect guy."

I would have loved to see John Cho on the show, but I can't count him among Jess's boyfriends since they never actually got together.

reply

Oh wow i forgot about John Cho! They would have made a cute couple! Too bad the storyline was kinda cut off there with only one ep that he appeares in.

I would say S1 Nick & Jess were a perfect match. Back when Nick was really grumpy & Jess was quirky- opposites attract situation. But they complemented each other well

-It's Grandpa. And it sounds like he's gotten into the horseradish again.

reply

Nick. But I'm just so numb to it now.

1- Nick
2- English teacher
3- John Cho
4- Sam

reply

I like how no one can remember Ryan's name and how everyone refers to John Cho's character as John Cho :)

reply

Wait what? Jess has a new boyfriend? John Cho?
No wonder why I stopped watching this show. They just keep stretching the show and we all know Jess and Nick are getting back together.

reply

Nah, the show wasted John Cho on a nothing, one-off episode. He never became Jess's actual boyfriend, although they set it up like there was supposed to be something between them.

John Cho would have been an improvement. This season her flavor-of-the-month is Robby, if you can believe it. Horrible pairing that is killing the show. That's the definition of "stretching it." The Nick/Jess arc didn't even start until last week's Christmas episode. We are pretty much just killing time now until they get back together. Kind of a disappointing season so far (save for Winston), but I hope the writers at least have some surprises left for the audience in the second half. Everything just feels really cliche and obvious at the moment. The cliffhanger from the S5 finale hasn't really come into play at all; they've just held it in neutral for half a season.

John Cho is such a great actor and Hollywood keeps crapping on his characters. He was on "Selfie" and I loved it but it was cancelled.

Whatever he's on, either ends up getting cancelled or he has to leave. WTF.

reply

I agree. John Cho is great! Maybe Hollywood still doesn't think people would pay to see an Asian leading male but I've liked him since he was on that short-lived FOX show "Kitchen Confidential" with Bradley Cooper.

"Selfie" was a great show that suffered from a horrible name though. I also liked "The B in Apt 23" but that show was never going to make it either, not with that title. Seems to be a theme in ABC shows.

reply

I agree the name "Selfie" was terrible but once I got over that I really started enjoying the show. On a positive note, the series wrapped up pretty well for a cancelled show.

reply

I love John Cho and agree he would've been a welcome addition.

Unfortunately I don't know if you could even call him a love interest on New Girl. He asked Jess out but that was kind of the end of their flirtation?

Do you mean for show watchability (let's pretend that's a word)? Or if Jess were a real person, who would be her best match?

I do love romantic pairings on tv and in film, but my favorites are always those that I think if they were real people, they really would stay together. So in THAT respect...

Honestly, Genzlinger would probably be her best match IMO. Him or Ryan, the dashing English guy. Jess is definitely quirky and I think she'd need someone that either matches that, or finds that endearing. Not annoying, which I think Nick eventually would (if not already). I've known couples like that in real life and always feel bummed out, watching the eye rolling and irritation from the partners. It's not a very respectful way to deal with your mate.

As far as the SHOW goes, yeah Nick. In the super predictable, opposites attract sort of way. At least earlier seasons Nick and Jess. She was all bubbly and he was all grumpy, it was cute and entertaining to view.

Side note: Honestly I didn't realize how much they have dumbed Nick down until I re-watch those episodes, it's been so gradual. But I thought he was more likable when he was kind of grouchy, but ultimately thoughtful and devoted to those he loved. Him supposedly having passed the bar is getting less and less believable.

That was a great response!

And this! Zooey Deschanel and Justin Long are the perfect TV sitcom couple. And Ryan was honest to goodness perfect, and I've never been so sad to see a sitcom character leave the country.

Finally, early seasons Jess and early seasons Nick were perfect for each other. So, anyone but Robby or Dr. Sam.

In rewatching the series, I actually realized they started dumbing Nick down during S3 and not after. That whole box thing and the breakup were out of character with who Nick was established to be back in S1/S2. Based on interviews the writers have given around S3 and afterwards, I think the plan was always to break them up so they were trying to lay the groundwork for that, although I think the execution fell flat and they never really had a plan for what to do with their characters after S2.

Initially, Jess seemed to have a better time with the breakup. Just stick her in another relationship (Ryan). Seems simple enough, although that formula got really tired as the seasons progressed. They had to write around Nick's arc in S2 to find him something else to do than chase Jess so he was floundering for a while until they made him grow up with his decision to buy the bar in S4 and being able to admit he wanted to get married and have kids in S5. Arguably, they don't know what to do with these characters if they don't revisit them as a couple so that's why they keep coming back to them, whether they feel the characters are "the heart of the show" or not anymore.
