If the writers wanted to give Jess and Nick other love interests until they get back together, they could have made a more realistic relationships.
I mean, are Jess and Robby even still together? I remember she kept wanting to end it, and kept losing her nerve.
Reagan and Nick are just weird together. If Nick wants to live with her, they should move in together into Reagan's nice apartment building.
Yes, their relationships are terrible this season and I'm not just saying that as a Nick/Jess fan. I've liked them in other relationships before but there is just no chemistry between Nick/Reagan or Jess/Robby.
Nick should have a long-term relationship after Jess but he has no chemistry with Reagan. "Raisin's Back" worked well because Zooey was there the whole time to run interference and distract from the fact that Jake Johnson and Megan Fox don't have any chemistry. At least they both have chemistry with Zooey, even if they don't have chemistry with each other. The writers would be smart to have a third person there most times to distract from their negative chemistry with each other.
I wish they brought back John Cho instead for Jess's love interest this season. Who thought Jess/Robby was a good idea? Literally no one was asking for that. They just didn't want Jess to be single while Nick was in a relationship but Jess definitely needed more single time to rebuild her character. I think a lot of people no longer know why they should root for Jess and the writers needed to re-establish that with her character on her own and not as an extension of yet another guy.

I was rewatching some of the earlier episodes and Nick literally has more chemistry with every other woman he has dated than Reagan. Even in "Naked" in S1, he has more chemistry awkwardly lying next to Amanda (Lake Bell's character) than he does standing next to Reagan.
Because of Megan Fox limitations as an actress they had to make her character very nonchalant and non-reactive which creates a huge problem because Nick's character only works when he has people reacting to his eccentricities and can play off that.
shareWell I think they were really looking to moderate some of the complaints about Jess as the lead protagonist. Reagan is supposed to be the anti-Jess, the new straightman since both Nick and Cece went way weird so there wasn't really a balancing energy in the show.
I think the first time Reagan was actually likeable was in last week's episode "Raisin's Back." She can be the straightman but they have to be careful to still humanize her, even if they don't want to make her "quirky" like the other characters. Letting her cut loose a little bit is better than just making her the "cool girl" watching all the weirdos around her.
I always thought early Nick as the straightman with occasional eccentricities is funnier than the character they make Nick into now. He's just really dumb now, just a really flat one-dimensional character. They want to make him into early season Winston for some reason but it doesn't really fit Jake Johnson's acting sensibility. It fits better with Lamorne Morris or Max Greenfield. We already have a Winston and a Schmidt. We don't need Nick to turn into them. Too much overlap between character traits, which was also the problem with Coach when they tried to bring him back in S4 as a main character.
I think Transformers has given her that stigma about her acting but she's been good in a few things. From the episodes I've seen of her in this she's as good as anyone portraying their character in the show.
shareIf they had to bring any of Jess's old boyfriends back, they should have brought Justin Long back again! They had a hilarious relationship! But I'm glad other people notice how unrealistic their relationships are now. It's quite obvious Nick & Jess are end game! If they just hint at it more then I won't be as bored with their current "Relationships" on the show. I miss that Nick/Jess angst in the earlier seasons!
