Overrated as movie

Who else agrees that the only reason this movie is as popular as it is is because it's all african americans? If this movie were called white panther, no way would it be this popular. Sure, it's a decent action movie popcorn flik, but it doesn't deserve the credit it's given (just like Wonder Woman didn't deserve all the attention it's gotten). HOw about we judge movies on the basis of merit rather than race?

No.

And no.

Oh, you’re certainly not the only one that believes this movie is only receiving so much acclaim for a ridiculous reason. Gee, one finely-executed blockbuster film that has a predominantly black cast and celebrates African culture is being raved about and the backwards crowd LOSES THEIR MINDS. Overrated as a movie? Nothing wrong with an opinion like that. But overrated because the cast is made up of people of color and thus people are afraid to be called racist if they say it sucks? Uh, huh. No doubt the crowd that shares this belief is the same one unleashing hell at “The Shape of Water” and liberal Hollywood right now (they tend to be fascists).

These complaints are BS and they’re bad for ya.

Do you seriously think this film is above average? It's honestly just an average superhero action flick, nothing more nothing less. Entertaining? Sure. Oscar worthy? No way. The race of the cast shouldn't change that.

reply

It's better than most superhero films. I'd say it's probably my 8th favorite of the Marvel films thus far, give or take.

I think it's fair to say that it's doing gangbusters at the box office in part because it is doing well with black audiences, but the majority of its success is due to it being a really great film.

This is the first MCU movie that has less international viewings than domestic [don't put your hopes for China that high]. That should tell you something.

The first Thor was godawful. Maybe the only reason it was successful is because it was a mostly white cast.

reply

or... it was just a very mediocre movie.

I have to agree. And there is nothing wrong in getting popular for the reason it has become popular. I totally understand and respect the cultural significance of this movie and a movie like Wonder Woman.

But as a neutral viewer (aware of the issues, but not surrounded by at as I do not live in North America) I found this movie quite dull, especially for a superhero movie. The main protagonist had many internal conflicts, yes, but they were not depicted in a very convincing fashion. Things were happening at a quick pace, but there was no proper flow in the movie. It felt disjointed. The performances were fairly average as well. There was nothing standout about the Killmonger either, so I am not sure why he is getting rave reviews.

A very average superhero movie on the whole.

completely agreed.

It's the "race card".

Cast mostly black
Director is black
Music made by black guy
Movie made for black americans
Came out in "black month" [or whatever nonsense it's called] and has black americans as the obvious bait... I mean, target audience.
Gets reviewed on youtube by a plethora of american black guys and gals [who hilariously even cry because there was never a movie with black people or black superheroes apparently; even Snoop Dog reacts to the trailer, lol]

Is the movie good? meh. MCU has way better movies [and I adored the character in Civil War]
Is it Oscar material? LOL no. Not by a mile

Meanwhile, the movie isn't getting much audience from abroad as other MCU movies have in the past [granted that China, Russia and Japan markets haven't opened yet]. An MCU movie that makes more money in America than outside of it [a first] is really telling.
