When BOMBSHELL won Best Directing, DEREK was the recipient. But he and TOM were the recipients for that other award ceremony. Why?
shareI thought Derek won the former for his choreography, though? It was muddy but Tom was worried separately about not getting Best Director, I'm pretty sure on that, which is why I think Derek wasn't considered for the latter by Tony rules.
shareYou're right: DEREK won Best Choreography. My point was that only TOM won Best Directing instead of both of them, unlike the other ceremony. I thought it was like in movies: Every award ceremony uses the same rule when it comes to recipients.

Kind of a mess either way, though, considering Derek "signed his Bombshell choreography over" to Tom. If anything, I would think that would have made them tied for a choreographer nomination, even though we also saw that Tom was clearly bad at it. What I guess I mean is, if Derek "signs it over" clearly that means it's so that Tom can change any of it he wants, which kind of muddies the question of why you'd get a nomination if they can't prove what choreography is yours - I'm sure deals are sometimes cut vis-a-vis Playbill credit the same way they are in Hollywood, and you might get more or less "paper credit" than you actually deserve. If the Tonys are like the Emmys for nomination, Derek would have to have submitted a tape of some of his minutes of Bombshell, but considering that's what Tom was worried about with Luke McFarlane, maybe the academy members solely judge by eyes and go sit in on the performances. For all I know the choreographer has to submit their book/notes. I should do some research...
shareDon´t know about choreography, but I think commenter-m is right. They tied for different productions. What maybe made it messy is that both acknowledged each others work in their speeches, so it seemed like it was the same production.
shareI'm sure the Tonys have a lot more flaws in their rules. Actually, the show adressed one: Voters only watch one performance of each show. Isn't there a way to change that? I mean, I think watching a show 3 times is enough to see the patterns.
