Still the greatest movie to exist

The soundtrack, the cinematography, the casting, it's all so perfect. This movie was poetic. No movie has come out that tops this film. Should be in a museum somewhere.

I agree that this movie is a masterpiece but I still think that the best film ever made in cinema history is Terminator 2: Judgement Day

How can you compare "The Place Beyond the Pines" to "Terminator 2: Judgement Day?" They are two completely different genres of film. One is an indie film made with a small budget, for the sake of art. The other is a HUGE Hollywood action Blockbuster. It's like comparing high grade steak to ice cream; (Pines being the steak.) They are both good, but one is so much more substantial. And so much higher quality.

Terminator 2 is still one of the greatest action movies ever made. The Place Beyond the Pines is very good but will be forgotten over the next 10 years where T2 lives on.

reply

"The Place Beyond the Pines" is an excellent film. Great movies are never forgotten, they become classics, or at least maintain a cult following. I'm sure it will be forgotten as soon as "Rebel Without a Cause" is forgotten. As the quality of film continues to deteriorate, people will look more to older films, and movies like this will continually be rediscovered.

Certainly it will be remembered fondly by some and discovered by others...but generally speaking the majority of people who have watched it will forget about it over time. I enjoyed it but I don't think it was anything spectacular that I would watch every time it is on TV like Goodfellas.

I was actually surprised how many people hated this movie. I was just reading a list of the most underrated movies on FB and people were crushing this in the comments...I know the average FB user may not have a greatest taste in movies but many people despised this for some reason. (It seemed like a lot had to do with the lack of Gosling in the 2nd and 3rd acts.)

reply

You know, people in general, (especially those feeble minded lost souls that hang out on facebook) tend to have very poor taste..in everything. Hearing the level of hate just makes me love this film even more, as that is usually a sign that it is something special. If more films like this were made I would go to the movies a lot more than 3 or 4 times a year. Also if their problem is "not enough Ryan Gosling" then it sounds like they were less interested in the film itself, and more concerned with looking at Gosling's ass..and that says something sad about this culture..

Yes I agree for the most part. It was odd that most that made that complaint were straight males. His character was certainly the most interesting to me but I understand that he was only the beginning of the story.

reply

Personally I am a fan of Gosling, however I found the last third of the film to be the most interesting; seeing the son of the unfairly murdered bank robber come face to face with the son of the cop that killed his father, was fascinating. It was just great storytelling. I can't imagine this film being forgotten, at least by any true fan of cinema.

I totally agree. I mean, really, since the beginning of cinema? What an exaggeration. I love the movie, but "the greatest film of all time?" Come on now...

reply

Love it too. It also captured the 90s and Field Days perfectly. He even had a Metallica shirt.
