They weren't necessarily traitors, they may have been there for the same reason Zamperini was. The Japanese may have been playing one off the other.

Could have been Americans who took the deal...or just have just been Western-race neutrals such as Swedish, or even German allies...after all, he did not mosey over and verify if they chewed gum and talked about baseball.
